When Mr. Gladstone was alive
members of the House of f'uwmuns
used to wuuder whether its ur Mr.
Balfour was louder of petting child
ren. Although pulttical eppuu•nte,
they were Intimate frleuds. Both lik-
ed literature better than the rough-
and-tumble of polities and they were
bound together also by their fond-
ness for children, especially tor Dor-
othy Drew, Yr, Oladatone'e pet
grandchild. In earlier years they
both petted Lady Sybil Primrose,
Lord Roseb.ry's daughter, whom Mr.
Gladstone nicknamed "the suffrage
babe," because she was born at a
time when a suffrage bill was agi-
tating Parliament.
An Hkgllsh writer who has suet
Mr. Balfour on several occasions tells
with pleasure of the first meeting. It

er, sad the writer was then a little
boy selllag programs for the good
of the cause, as Is the habit of the
suns of Primrose League dames.
Greatly daring, the boy stopped Mr.
Balfour as he was walking through
the park to the platform to make
his sp.ech, and spiced him to buy a
program. He took one and generous-
ly paid ten times the proper price.
"I'm glad to see you helping our
cause se young, my little man," he
said, patting the boy's head. "What
are you going to be when you grow

"I'd like to be • great mita in
Parliament, like you, sir," the
youngster replied. '
"Don't yuut" exclaimed Mr. Bal -
tour, laughing. "There's no fun iu it.
I'd rather be a buy like you."
Some of the organisers of the weet-
Ing came up and told Mr. Balfour
that the people trere waiting to hear
him speak, but he waved them aside.
'Can't you tee .I'ui trying to

Two eeks of Record Mantle Selling
WE swing into the third week of our great November mantle sale
on Sat l day morning. The prices we are quoting for new and
stylish mantl are only made possible by our purchase of over one
hundred garments, the surplus stock of one of the leading jacket
makers in Canada. He wanted to empty his racks before leaving for
the Old Country to purchase his material for next spring, and we got
the lot at prices that let us sell them $3.00 to $3.50 less than he made
them to retail for. All are new, sensible and serviceable styles. and
there is not an old style or a poor garment in the whole lot. See them.
We will save you money on your mantle this year. Your choice of the
lot at two prices.
