> THE HURON. BRUCE & GREY
ELECTRIC ROAD.
IT has been conceded for many years
that the great hindrance to the proper
development of Goderich is the lack
of sufficient railway facilities. Time
and again efforts have been made to
improve this condition by getting con-
nection with the C.P.R., and delega-
tion after delegation has gone to out -
aide pointe in an endeavor to get corn
biped action to bring about the desired
result, but in the past these efforts
have beer fruitless, owing to circum-
stances that were entirely outside the
control of Goderich and vicinity.
Today these conditions are changed,
and the people of Ooderich have be-
fore them an opportunity to help
themselves to increased railway com-
munication, if they so desire. A pro-
ject is now submitted to them by
which they may become a joint owner
In an electric road where the latest
and best appliances kuuwn to the car-
rying trade will be placed at their
risposal.
At the last et,e.lon of the Legisla-
ture, as is known to our readers, •
charter for the construction of an el-
ectric road, with Ooderich as the piv-
otal point, was obtained by a coli•
pang composed of local men. After
the charter was obtained the company
immediately sought to get the strong
financial backing that was required
and succeeded in making a revocable
impression in several instances. The
financier., however, invariably stipu-
lated that sutticient interest should be
shown in the undertaking by the
people residing in the section to be
benefitted by the road, in the shape
of stock taking, to warrant them in
providing for the balance of the sum
required. and in several instances the
provisional directors were informed
that when this was done, the greatest
bar to the prosecution of the work
would be removed This is a (natter
entirely in the hands of the people of
this locality, and as (ioderich, from
its central position on the projected
road, stands to benefit largely by Its
construction, the opportunity to de-
cide that point It -now plated before
its rexidents.
The Lake Shore portion of the roars,
according to the charter,•will have ita
northern terminal at Owen Sound, on
Georgian Bay, while on the south it
will extend to the southerly boundary
of Huron and eventually to London,
Sarnia and 11'iodsor. The loop line
will go through the heart of Huron
and give every municipality in the
county nccess to the county town. At
the next sua.ioo of the Legislature an
amendment to the charter will he
wsktrl fee to Doable tate Lina to bo .ex-
tended from Dungannon to Winghnm,
to conne.t with the C.P.1t at that
point. This will undoubtedly make
Goderich a prominent railway centre
In the near future.
It were needless to mention the
many benefits that would accrue to
Goderich by the _construction of the
Huron, Brune k Grey. Electric Road
and its branches, but it may not be
out of place to draw attention to a
few of them :
(1)Goderich would Neve an indtpcn
dent line, that would give the town
all the privileges of that railway com-
petition which has been so desired in
pant yaar.,
(2) During the period of construc-
tion
onstructtion the town would be a centre for
distribution of material and litho',
and would thereby gain a direct hone
6t4 many tines greater t'un the
amount of the investment the
town is asked to slake.
(3) The large portion of the county
north and oast of Uodorich et present
without railway accommodation woulli
be rendered easy of access to Gode-
rich, and thereby both would be
greatly benetittet1
(4) The headquarters of the road
would be in Goderich, and after the
first twenty miles of ria. I were built,
a .nor of about $1,000 per week
would be paid out in running experts
es. Thie weekly outlay Would become
permanent ,just about the time when
the direct benefit to Goleri from
construction disbursement* w fall-
ing off, and would put in:circula 'on
annually in town as much as the entire
vote now asked for in favor of the
bylaw.
(11 • In St. Catharines, Grimsby,
Woodstock, Ingersoll, Newmarket,
Aurora, and every other town where
an electric road has been constructed
there has been a marvellous improve-
ment in the condition of business.
Population has increasers, a marked
improvement in real estate has taken
place, the merchants have been,beme•
fitted, additional industries have been
started, and push and enterprise hove
taken the place of lethargy and
stagnation.
(6) Enterprise shown by the town
in promoting a competive railway will
so increase the freights at our port
that the Government will be forced to
carry out the proposed harbor im-
provements, which will not only help
trade and commerce but will put a
very large amount of additional money
in circulation immediately the public
works are commenced.
(7) The rate of taxation required
annually to cover the amount of
stock to be taken as set forth in the
bylaw is a mere bagatelle when the
benefits 'to accrue are considered.
The following statement from the
',eminent auditor will prove of in -
