COALIT)ON TALK ALL HUMBUG.
ALL this talk about a political coali-
tion in Ontario is humbug. A coalition to
stay in would mean only soother coalition
to put the "stay -ins" out. The litres of
party are closely drawn in Ontario, and no
straddle -the -fence policy would hold for an
hour. A few chicken-hearted newspapers
and one or two political Mobblers betters
that • ooahtiou would be the ea!yatiou of
the Provutto-that is all there is to it
Now, how do matters stand! At the
Ontario Provincial elections on the 29th of
May last, Hon. G. W. Rosa lett the Govern-
ment tome*. He proved himself Labe the
ablest leader the, Liberals ever nadin On-
tario, but he was not backed up as he should
have been. r Many of the Liberal con-
stituencies ware lust by carelessness
and inaction on the part of the candi-
dates and their friends. Since the Mayr ot
CLADaruna's first campaign in Midlolhien
no greater efforts were made by a political
leader to pluck victory from an apparently
hopeless battle.
Against Roes were ranted his etrai, htout
political opponents, the liquor interests of
the Province, the temperance' element, to a
large extent, and the disgruntled Liberals
-a veritable Cave of Adullum. • WI h him
were the .i d- ine Lah.ra'e who believed in
the policy that hal been handed down from
BU.AIILTw-noway from-fhrwa'rtn-jf
and from HARDY to Rosa. They knew that
Noss was fighting the fight of his life and
they kept the gap against all comers.
Mr. WHITNLY, In hie 'speech at Ste recent
Conservative gathering, said that he would
be Premier of Ontario an six months Hon.
O. W. Ruse is just u confident that Mr.
WHrroF.r will continue in opposition long
after the MMI mouths expire That coridi-
tionlof things doesn't argue fur a coalu.on,
and the good Penes of the Province is
against it.
We had e coalition government i.• 't-
tario from 1867 to 11471, and that was the
sod of it.. If a coalition Lo. ernmeot were
ormed at the Present juncture it would
begin to die en the day 4.1 its forma-
tion. No halt -dozen men can get together
nowadays and lead a Province without hair
Ing a definite policy ta place before the peo-
ple. A policy of coalition is on'y • policy
of expediency -a temporary thing a• best -
and would Is a decaying invitation from -
the start
The Tories don't want • c,alition, an
neither do the true Liberate. As for tie
Mugwump•, that's different. They speak
only for themselves, -rand they don't count.
THEY CAN'T "JOLLY" TARTE.
NOT many years ago the man most
reyded by the Tory prem wan J. karat.

of Parliament A Cabinet MM11ister was
forced; to atop down and out, a member of
Pahamant
was committed to • felon's cell,
and an expanse w•a* made that 'showed
that n.illions of public money hal been
recklessly pandered For being the ac-
tive event'' opening the eyes of the public

Why, then, when your bowels arc
red of order, do you treat them as
useless?
That is precisely what it means to
take violent cathartics. They do
not regulate the bowels, hut take
their work away from them, debili-
tate them, and make you more
constipated than ever.
You bad far better throwaway your
good watch than treat your bowels
roughly. You can get another

financially and otherwise proved abortive,
' and when, during the election of 1896, be
uedertouk to "carry the war into Africa" and
aourch his scorchers, his success was pheu-
otneual. He electrified Quebec, and only a
corporal's guar) of his oppouenta got back
to Ottawa. It was little wonuer that
TARTis nate. WAS anathema in•rmeth& with
the Tories of the old Oen stripe in Quebec
and the followers of The Mail and Empire
in Ontario. For years the work of villify-
ing was continued, but as TART. would
neither die nor resign a new polio' hat,
heron adopted In the Tory prop Taftra is
no longer a renewed°, a nonentity, a Tory
east -oft', He is now the man in the sadd'e,
the brains of the ash niinistrAtdon, the arbiter
of the destinies of this country. Every
word he utters is now a pearl, and every
seut, ment is a statesmanlike utterance. All
of which wort be very pleasant to Mr.
TeerC, atter the bitter epithets of former
days. But Mr. 7A0 a le too knowing a
bird to be caught with ..heir. ile knows •
"jolly" when he sees it, even when it isn't
labelled. and we can imagine the smile of
aatieffaction that light. up hie rouulenante
when lie semi the efforts of the Tories to
curry favor w_ ith him along the line of ful-
some flattery. He knows his onsinees about
as well as any piddle rnaiein Canada, and
when the 'fury prose undertake to pat him
on the bock and i10 the' brayer' act, it must
remind him of tlie story of the youngster
who undertook to shoo hie grandfather how
to suck eggs.
