AFTER THE BA rTLE.
THE Battle of the Ballots in On-
tario has been fought and won by the
Libeial party against • combination
ot conditions which makes one won-
der how the winning was possible.
In almost every constituency an
attempt was made to induce temper-
ance Liberals to desert their party on
the specious pretext that the Roes
Administration had not gone sufficient-
ly far in temperance legislation. In
some cases this plea proved effective,
and there are several instances where
temperance Liberal candidates have
been -knifed" because they supported
s temperance Cabinet which had nct
gone farther than the public senti-
ment warranted in favor of temperance
legislation.
In addition to the attack from the
extremists of the temperance party, t
brewers snd distillers put up the
of their lives against the Ro,. ov-
ernment because it had gone ' , tar
in the matter of temperau.. legisla-
tion, with the result tha four seats
which had previously en represent-
ed by Liberals with ood majorities
were captured for ' HITISEY and anti -
prohibition. In 'ndon, where CAR -
LINO and LAn have large brewing
interests', , Lave was defeated by
ADAM BE . ; in North Essex, where
HIRAM 'ALEZit h Soto have their
large stillery at Wslkerville, the
Li 1 candidate,W. J. McKai,went
d n to defeat; in North Waterloo,
' here Jos SEAORAM is the head of the
heap amongst the Tories,I3iumilAt•I•r,
the Reform standard-bearer, suffered
defeat ; and in Guelph, where SI,LE-
MAR'S brewery is quite an institution,
Jos Howes', the Tory candidete,suc-
ceeded in getting • majority of 500,
as against 200 in 1898, which defeat-
ed Col. MUTRIK in South Wellington.
We all know the desperate effort
that was made to carry West Huron
by an amalgamation of Whiskey and
Water, under the guise of prohibition,
snd we know also that it was only by
the moat strenuous eftor'te on the part
of Mr. CAMERON and his friends that
the attempt of the unholy alliance
was brought to naught. And so the
contest appears to have been prosecut-
ed in every constituency, and all
along the line. A cave of Adullsm
was evidently formed against the Ross
'Administration,and in it were gathered
the old line Conservatives, who were
the real opponents of the Govern-
ment ; the Tory temperance crowd
with the dupes whom they had de-
luded into the belief that the Govern-
ment had not gone far enough in tem•
perance legislation ; and last,, and by
n o means least potent in influence at
---'-election time, the iwnwery and die
tillery interests, whose antagonism
had been armor.' beeauae Rohs, he
their mind, had gone too far in the
way of temperance legislation. A
motley aggregation itdeed were the
Adullamite..
But in spite of all of these combin-
ation'', the old Liberal ship weathered
the storm and came safely into port,
and thousands of Liberal temperance
men and others, who were seduced
from their allegiance to party by
specious pleas and fanatical cries, re-
joice today that the Province has been
saved in spite of their misdirected op
position frons what would have proved
to be the greatest of calamities.
