FISH IN THE NET.
THE fishing expedition in the parlia-
mentrry committee on the West
Huron case hes been one of the lamest
and tamest things in the shape of a
pablic investigation that has taken
place to GLm•da in many years.
For months past the Tory prom had
been shouting itself hoarse concerning
what it could prove if a parliamentary
oommittee were given to investigate
alleged irregularities to West Haran.

A oommitt+es was given to therm, and
the committee was run " wide open,"
so far as giving the Tories a fru. hand
to flab for evidence is concerned. A
brief of imposing proportions was
drawn up, and placed under tne per-
sonal supervision of Messrs Bosptw
and Powta.l.. Mr. R. 0. HATS, a
witness, was allowed to sit in the com-
mittee room during the progremas of
the trial, although a liberal who had
not been enbesonasd , was Asked to
withdraw. Major Jos Beet acted Y

After an investigation before • parlia-
mentary committee on which .at no
fewer than thirty-nine lawyers, which
lasted three weeks, and in which
ninety-nine witnesses were examined,
besides four under examination by the
county judge, not one tittle of eyi-
denoe has been advanced that would
cause the arrest of one deputy return-
ing officer charged with wrong -doing,
and the jails are still empty. In a
can before an ordinary court of
jurisdiction it dorsa not often tike
more than a day to bring in • convic-
tion, it there be anything to convict
on, but in this case an investigation
that lasted throe weeks, aid in which

minds in Canada assisted the proseou.
L2011, nothing of sufficient importance
to justify the arrest of one deputy re -
terming dither on suspicion has been
advanced.
During the progress of the investi-
gation the Tory press was f.11 of 'tate-
meats that returning officer Feu bad
fled the country and gorse to Dakota.
It w.. also 'toted that other witnes-
ses had been got out of the way by
the bad Grits. It now turns out that
no serious effort was ever made by
the Tory inquimtors to get FARR or
any other of the men said to be want-
ed before the committee. On the
contrary, when any of them turned up
at Ottawa and desired to be examined
every obtacle was thrown in the way
of their examination by the gentlemen
who were running the invesfdpiion
for the Tories.
