TSViMDAI. MAROS e. MOIL HOLMES IS A STHONG MAN. THE Mail and Empire tries to take comfort out of the fact that M. C. CAngMioN's majority in Ashfield wan 212 in 1896 and that ROBERT Hoof's had • majority of only 11 on Feb. 21, 1899. This fact might be of some significance if The Mail had told the whole truth, but; as is usual with that sheet, the truth ha. not 1,04(1 told. In 1896 Centime f was opposed - :vby two Tories -1.1. & Tupperite, and KILTy, an anti=Tupperite. CAM 8RON received 430 against 39:1 cast for the two Tories. There isn't mach consolation in that for The Mail and Empire, or them who get their inspira- tion from that source. But why does The Mail and Empire not point to Clinton where Houma nn the Liberal majority from 22 to 73, to Colborne where he wiped • minority of 33 off the slate and plated 69 in his favor in its; stead, to Wawa - nosh where the majority was increased from 60 to 120, or to Goderich town- ship where a minority of 2:,0 was re- duced to 1871 As a matter of fact ROeINT HOLYEb bas put up the strongest fight ever made in West Huron since the riding was constituted. He is strong- er than his predecessor by more than 100 votes, and his opponents in the recent bye -election know it to their sorrow. GUELPH JUNCTION R. R.. IT ie now a number of years .ince the Guelph Junction R.R. was pro- jected, with Goderich as the object- ive point, and if all the original pro- jectors rojectors are not to be allowed to pan hence before the consummation of the work, it is high time that effort was made to carry out the original policy of building the road. So far as Goderich is concerned, matters have materially changed since the Guelph Junction road was first brought before the public. This town is now beyond question on the high road to a prosperous future. After a series of lean years during which a terrible slump was visible in the busi- ness interests of the town, we are now enjoying an era of progress and the people have been spurred on to activ- ity and enterprise. In the fall of 1897 a fire destroyed the old G.T.It. elevator --a 60,000 bushel concern -and inside of a year it was replaced with one of a capacity of 660,000 bushels. The dredging of the harbor, which was initiated last year, will, we aro led to believe, be oontinued next season, the object in view being the creation of a 20 -foot channel which will admit the heavy grain freighters of the Lakes to the elevator dock. In Guelph and along the line of the proposed route a strong feeling in favor of prosecuting the work of con- struction on the proposed line has sprung up, and at the recent banquet of the Guelph Board of Trade s Gode- rich guest struck the keynote when he spoke ef the necessity that existed at. the present juncture for carrying on the work. The remarks of G. B. RTAII, Colonel MAC,DONALD and other prominent Guelph residents, strongly endorsing the scheme, were words of wisdom, fitly spoken and timely. So far se the people of Goderich are leooer'ned there in a unanimous feeling 1p favor of the building of the Guelph /Snot:non Bead to this port. Present - the 0. T.
