ROBERT HOLMES' CANDIDACY.
AS the canvass for the Commons
progresses the strength of Rouser
ROLES.. becoming apparent.
When first his name was mentioned
there were many of the electors who
did not know him personally, and
this clam feared that he was not suf-
ficiently known to be a strong condi-
dote.
As the campaign has advanced sod
ss Mr. Molar La. had opportunity°
to move around the electoral district,
the feeling that he was an unknown
can has given way, and. today he
stands in • strong position before the
electors.
Last week his trip through Colborne
and his visit to Goderich were vote -
totters, and next week we believe it
is his Intention to make a tour of
Ashfield, where we have every reason
to believe be will receive a right
hearty wrloome from the electors.
Mr. HoLRse is • good stamp of man.
In religion be is broad minded and
tolerant to all creeds ; in politics he
is Libel in the best interpretation of
the term ; i business he is square -
dealing and honest, and in his per-
sonal relations with men he is frank
and aboveboard on all occasions.
Hs is • young mac with • good
kaowledge of politics, and :he district
e1 West Huron will be well represent-
ed in Parliament when be is elected
member next month.
THE DURNIUN CASE-
THK Children's Aid Society of the
County el Hess have received quite an ad.
verti..msut lately by reaeat of their action
in the DOLspR car.
Last March the police magistrate com-
mitted to the care of the society the second
daughter, Nutt, end a few months later,
with the written cement of the mother, the
police magistrate cemented the remaining
children, Loma, Limo and FLosT,into the
society's Ilaiw1.. The children were clothe.,
and kept at the expense of the 'society until
suitable homes weld he found for them, and
finally were place., out in capital f0.ter-
h(ries, which bad been selected with great

had every ptoepect of becoming happy.
useful membere of society. The circum
etanoes of the home had been well known in
Goderich for some years. Indeed, the
Children'. Aid Society carried out only what
was attempted some two or three y ago,
before the 'society was formed, by some good
ladies who realized the Clanger which thte•t-
sDed the young children if they were nut
removed. F.verything wooed to have been
very happily arrangool, and the mother es -
premed herself to the president of the Pori
ety, and, we are informed, aloe to Mr.
Kmeo, in Toronto, as well satisfied that the
very hest was being done for her children.
But suddenly one morning, as Mr. KELP)
says in hie letter to The World, two ladies
appaered in the office at Toronto who be
came very angry and threatened to go to
the press if the children were not give'. op
at once ; and they apparently did go tef the
press, for articles, and letters appeared in
The Toronto World arid London Free )'row
frau which it looked as if the mother lined
leen very roughly trotted. A Mw weeks
after this the members of the Goderich "moi-
ety were eurpris.d to hear th.t at the re-
quest of the Provincial liecretary one of the
oliklten had been returned to her mother,
and the mother, who had been worked up
into • state of hysteria by her newfound
friends, had, apparently with Lheir moist.
•rice, kidnapped another of the little gir s.
It was evident from whet appeared is the
papers that the Toronto ladies had leen
toll a great deal that wan not true, and it
was bat that if they had not the courtesy
to write to the 'moiety to aecei•tain the facts

vative newspapers aid pleased the
Crowbar' public by iiauguratIug a-ueut
postage for the Domioio u in i(5 dogmatic as
well as foreign service on New Yew's day.
For months back The Mail slid Empire
and the lamer organs of the party were
elamaruyt for a domestic postage rate of two
cents, and now that they have received it
they are clamoring against it, The Mail go-
ing no far as to soy that the Government
will have • large postal deficit at the end of
the fiscal year. Ve••••11.-
We doubt the contention of
Cooierrative confrere, but, even If its utter-
ance prove correct, it were better to have a
deficit incurred by which all of the people
get a benefit thea to have a deficit brought
about by incompetence and jobbery, as was
the lege under the cid regime.
The [eduction in Canadian postage is a
step in the right ttirectionf, and the Port
