Cameron, of The Hamilton Spectator, now takes him light wine with the charming. naivete of a French habitant. THE PLEBISCITE IN HURON. THE plebiscite in Huron gives • majority of over 3,000 in favor of prohibition, and is • pretty clear io- dination that in this coun/y, at any rate, the handwriting is on the wall so far as the liquor traffic is con- cerned. Is West Heron over 1,_100 of a me- jerfty i. decided a ai tpe manu- facture, importation and sale an a beverage of intoxicating liquor, and in future parliamentary elections the question of prohibition will not fail to some up in connection with the can- didature. There are many who find fault with the small vote polled on Sept. 29, and . who claim that the percentage of the Satire vote polled will nos warrant the Government in bringing down prohibitory legislation. Such may be the result, but, after all, it must be remembered that there is no reason to believe that had this plebiscite been taken at municipal time and under the conditions that existed when the Provincial plebiscite was taken in 1894, • similarly large showing in favor of prohibition would have re- sulted. The failure of the antis to put up an open fight was the cause of lulling the Drys into • false security, and kept down that tendency to put up a strong fight, which would have been the some had anything like public op- position been attem ted P Of one thing we have cause to feel thankful, and that is the rood -na- tured and friendly spirit that pre vailed in this riding throughout the contest. In the weeks that preceded the elect.on no harsh language was need, and on election day, during the voting, and while the returns were coming in, prohibitionist and anti talked over the figures in the most amicable manner. The old style of harsh language and ill -feeling is hap- pily dying out WAR VESSELS ON THE LAKES. THE Chicago Times -Herald, one of the best of American journals, has a thoughtful article on war vessels on the lakes, and takes the ground that there is no reason why existing rela- tiooa should be interfered with. By the treaty of 1817 an arrange- ment was made to the following ef- , foot : •• That the naval force to be maintained upon the American lakes by Great Britain and the United States shaB henceforth he confined to the following vessels on each tide, that is : On Like Ontario to one morel not to exceed 10C tone harden and armed with one 18 -pmol cannon. On the upper lakes to two vessel. not exceed leg like burden each, end armed with like force." r This treaty may be abrogated at any time by either power giving six months' notice to the other. In the last days of the civil war, when there was some apprehension that there ,slight be trouble on the border be- tween the Stetes and Canada, Presid- est. Iai!ppr i pure formal nature loo terminate the arrangement, but before tete time elapsed the situation on the be der had changed for the bettiw, and the notice of annulment was with- drawn by the United States. Since that time the war vessdis of the States on the lake have been ibw Tad to the Michigan, known to many If the people of Gederieh, and its et - ripe is now being made to add the tip.
