THAT the under for constructing the breakwater et Goderich hoe been awarded to a local firm given great satisfaction to the residents of this town and surrounding country. It is • guarantee that a fug mese- - um of the cost of construction will be. expended in the town, and that, there- . bogey aaeoelit wni accrue 7. e•`• rwhich has not always resulted when a contract hu been awarded. As to the contractor,, we need say nothing, as both FRANCIS Smarm and D. MCGILLICUDDY are well known to the people of Huron, each having hived in the county for several det.tles. It is to be regretted that the work of harbor cx.netrnctioo, when last warded was not more vigorously pro - ted, but we are in • position to te that no time will be lost by the firm in carrying out the contract. iminary arrangements are now der way, and presently the manager tgf oonstruction will be on the ground :pod the work properly initiated. We might toy for the benefit of moldersmel the. psbli... pommel, that tate contract was awarded in open competition, on the merits of the case and to the lowest tender. THE DREDGING CONTRACT. We regret to learn that no dredg- ling contract has been awarded thus tar in connection with Uoderjch har- bor for the present year. _. That a nornesity exists for immedi- ate action towards dredging the her- bor no one will deny, and for that reason no time should be lost in get- ting the work under way. It is quite true that the Depart- ment of Public Works has Clone its duty in calling for tenders for th work, and it is also true that the De- portment is not to blame that the tenders submitted were out of Rli pro - (•portion to the appropriation, and that on that account none of them was IF soospted. All the same, the necessity for the work still exists, and some effort should be made for improving the harbor, even if day work has to be resorted to for a portion of the re- mainder of the season. At present there is a dredge lying idle in the harbor, and we believe an arrangement oould be easily come to, whereby a benefit would result to the harbor without a very large expense being involved to the Department. Certainly half of the appropriation Weald go a long distance toward ahy improving the condition the harbor is in at present. SNAP SHOTS. It was Jose 'BILUNoe who wrote 9 stay is 2 win."
