410DIRICH. THURSDAY. AUG. iL UHL
THE LEGISLATURE -
AT the present time it doesn't look as
bright for the I )pposition M it did
soon after the eleltion.
The -smoke of bettle-hoe-pleased
sways..-eraAise. andAoR aliticaJ ,
bodies are now lined up so that they
can easily be earn and numbered off.
Hon. Mr. HARDY, the Government
leader, points out that his majority of
eight is one more than he had in the
last legislature, and three or four more
than the Government had in the elec-
Moo of 1883. He also claims that
Ontario went 20,000 better for his
Government at the last election than
it did for Sir WILPRID LAURIRR in
1896.
As against that showing, Mr.
Wierreer and his friends contend that
in 1894 the Conservative party did
not number more than one-quarter of
the members of the House ; that the
Opposition was • thing of shreds and
patches, with the majority of the
Patrons !lady to mote for tE'"le Tovern-
ment every time when Horded : and
that in March last the political tidal
wave increased their numbers nearly
one hundred per cent -1'1W that the
tide is still moving onward.
As matter really stand, there is a
majority of 8 for the Government, end
if the members elected by the con-
stables' votes were unseated probably
two votes would be lopped off from the
Government majority. This, if the
000stitueucies were carried by the Op-
position, would still leave HARDY in
the lead by 4 of a majority, and if he
oould not hold out in that event he
would deserve to be thrown down.
For ourselves, we would prefer that
the Government should not have a
very large majority. Large majorities
give members of the Government
swelled beads, and swelled heads play
the deuce with political parties. As
things stand in Ontario there is no-
thing to swell the head of any member
of the Government, or Government
supporter on the floor of the House,
just at present., and the chances are
that the wants of the Province and
1 and not the uiremente of
people, r'e9
individual members and ex -members
and their cousins and their •unto, will
reoeive tbe best possible attention. if
they dothe Opposition will continue
In their present position for many a
day. If they do not the HARI/Y Ad-
Imilai.tration will not live to wear
whiskers.
