OTTAWA, May 3. -It goes without

hal lust now is the new Liberal tariff. Is be
safe to assume dist tis. tariff rawhides', as
a whole, have base reoeived with unbound-

well also have they proved pleasing to the
multitudes of Conservatives throughout the
Dominion. In some p•reioul•r feature or
item, ot course, there doubtless will be ex-
perienced more or lees disappointment In
proportion as certain sections of the country
may be affected by the bearing which each
feature or item may exert upon them Take,
for instants, the tax on bituminous oo•l.

Scotia and British Columbia the retention
of the duty oar this article brings to these
particular ovations the most profound setts -
faction, while to votario the fact wenn
fail to excite a considerable degree ot diva
i.fiotion until tho motive and wisdom of tis
octal duty at its present high scale beoom
apparent. It has been retained principal
because of the evident determination of t
tariff makers of the (hotted States to pr

defence then it became necessary fee Caned
to repel the attack of the American,
with what better weapon than that ot h

the coal duties. The whole situation

United States towardp Canada, as well
the natural outcome of high promotion.
wbLeh le the avowed plioy of the dominetn

republic. To "see" the Venk, his 75 cents
per ton oa the bitusainoes might be as
much, under the eircnrnatanoes, se the
middle sections ot the country would care
to put up ; but, to go hire 50 cents batter
by planing an impost to that erteet on the
anthracite, will be rather an effort to shy

which the Government will lake with great
reluctance. It is to be hoped that the ne-
cessity will not 'rise to foroe the Govern-
ment to carry out the threat to re•impois
the duty on anthracite coal. Tnere is no
fulthraoite in Nova !tootle, or anywhere else
In the older nrovinoes, neither is there any
in the great Northwest, or British Columbia.
To tax this artiole. then, would 'imply in-
