THURSDAY. OCT. M. Mfr INDEPENDENCE IN POLITICS, ONE of the grandest principles in the government of any country is that of independence in politics. That principle prevails in Britain to a very great extent, it is becoming more prevalent in the United States, and on two conspicuous occasions— 1r7s and I896 --it was observed in Canada by the middle-aged voters of to -day. Party did not pot Sir Joan MACD0/1: ALD ire power in 1878, neither did it accomplish the overthrow of the Tt•F- Pak administration last June. It was the independent vote that turned the scale on each occasion, and the inde- pendent vote can turn down any Gov- ernment of any nation or Province • t any time when the wrongdoing or in- capacity of the rulers has been dem- onstrated. There was * day, and not very long since, when the people of Canada in politics weer joined to political idols, and could not be estranged. A man was a Grit or a Tory because his fath- er before hint had been a Grit or a Tory, and all argument to convert him from his hereditary political be- lief failed. To -day that condition ex- ists only in a limited meaaure, and inde- pendence of political thought is becom- ing indelibly stamped more and more on the electorate. The day when half a dozen or a dozen men, called Gov- ernment, could dictate to the people, in the face of public opinion, is put, acid any Government that would at- tempt that kind of thing would meet an untimely end. We are not such hero worshippe as we were, and the politician cannot conjure with a name as he did in for- mer years. In the put a man who has been called great may have guid- ed the destiny of the Dominion or Province. He dies or ie removed, as the case may be. His mantle may fall on an incompetent or a political charlatan, but his greatness does not bear the mantle company. The party heelers clap their hands, and cry, "The King is dead ;---long live the King ' " but thinking men do not in- dulge in such idle chatter. They know that a strong individuality and a great political force has gone, and that venality or incompetency is now endeavoring to play the role, and knowing this, they refuse to follow farther a party from which the glory has departed. They immediately break from the trammels of partyism and seek more independent lines of thought and action. This is more particularly observable is country constituencies where, in the past, the voter had been looked upon as a dyed-in-the-wool on one side or the otb.r—e mere chattel of his party. In the past few years a wonderful change hu been effedMd. No longer may the politician ring the changes on then mea of dead or dy Ing stattmen with the hope of re- sponsive spensive ch irs as to lilts olden days. The advent of the Patron and the indepsndent candidate into Dominion and Local polities be. made a great doessee in this regard, and the general Leildet education and of indigos. rgwgbt has d..s the rept. Mr hand -So. In Ontario this independent feeling is growing apron, and permeates the Province to • very great extent. Party lines are no longer as plainly marked as they onoe were, and the tendency is to judge political gees tions on their .writs ra':•car than by the men who espouse them, or the in tenet of the party under whose sus pices they are intro•luced. The largest figura in Ontario in the recent Dominion election was D'ALTon Me- (`AItTUT, and although he did not suc- ceed in getting • large following in the House, he did more to strand the late Government, so far as this Pro- vince is crimsoned, than any other half-dozen politicians of ;rote. In future elections it will not be the Premier or the Cabinet Ministers, or the prominent mambo's on the floor of the House, who will exercise the greatest influence in • campaign. Then is another, and far greater than any of these. He is the independent politician, and he has to be reckoned with in every cemp•ign hereafter. He is particularly numerous in Huron county just now.
