CAMERON AND WEST HURON.
THAT M. C. CAMERON will carry
West Huron by • very large majority
is beyond question.
He has put up a great fight, and
will, we believe, re than cover the
combined votes of his opponents, al-
though every possible plan hat been
tried by them to elitist. former sup-
porters from their allegu►nce to him.
From every township coins encour
aging reports of additions to his fol-
lowing, and in the towns h. will re-
ceive fine majorities.
He has visited every municipality
of the constituency personally, and
magnetized his friends at the sane
time that be paralyzed his opponents.
His speech at the nomination, which
appears elsewhere, was a masterpiece
of humor, ssrcasm, and strong indict
ment of corruption.
He has had goal local assistants on
his own platform in J. T. GARRow, M.
PP., Joffe M(•MILLAA, M. P., We.

repro eeted at rvery meeting of his
Government opponent by M. G.
CAIIEROli and D. Met ILLI('UDDS.
The Liberals are in great fettle and
fall of enthusiasm. The Tt'PI'ERITsa
are in the dumps and know that they
will -be " snowed -up " in June this
year.
Tueoley next Mill be the day of
judgment, to far as the reign of the
corruptionists at Ottawa is concerned.

be final and irrevocable.

There aro on the list men who are
drawing from the fund sums of over
$2,000 a year, and who have drawn
since they were put on the list sums
ranging from $10,000 to $40,000, and
yet have not contributed altogether to
the fund an amount equal to one year
ly allowance.
Recognizing the abuses that have
been introduced into the system, the
Liberals in the late Parliament moved
to abolish it as at present established,
giving due regard, of course, to the
rights of thou, who have already paid
money into the fund. The Conserva-
tives voted down the proposal.
Mr. LAVRISR has promised to abol-
ish this system. wbich taxes the peo-
ple of this country $200,000 • year to
keep in idleness several hundred able-
bodied men, many of whom go to
foreign lands to spend the money
which they draw from the Canadian
people.
IT will be remembered that at the
time of the recoewtruction of the Min-
istry by Stir CHARLss Tu•PPSR, the
name of B. B. (*Lea, Q.C., was men-
tioned as that of . man who had been
invited to take .. position in the new
Cabinet, and apparently strong hopes
were entertaioed is (l).rrnment t•ir
cies that he would accept the invite
tion. Mr. Osten, however, declined.
Some time later a number of the
independent electors of Haldimand
asked Mr. (*LER to stand as s candi-
date in opposition to Dr. MONTAG(•R,
After consideration of the request.
M r. Otos. it reluctantly declined this
invitation also, but he consented to
give an address nn the public quer
tions of the day before the electors of
Haldimand and Monck. A meeting
was accordingly called for June 9th
at Dunnville, and Mr. O.LKR was lis-
tened to with deep interest.
His remarks on the Manitoba
school question are reported tut fol-

FREt TRADE " RUIN.'
j)ROTIIC IONIBT8 are forever tell-
ing us that Great Bntain is on the
point of giving up its free trade prin-
ciples in favor ^f the policy which
they shout for so lustily. They have
been giving us that cry for the last
twenty years : but still England ap-
pears to get Siong very well without
protection. Two months ago, when
the tiritish Chancellor of the Ex-
chequer introduced the budget in the
imperial House of Commons, his
speech was of a very rosy hue. He de-
clared that " the year just concluded
was, financially speaking, a remark-
able year. The amount that flowed
into the exchequer was greater than
in any previous twelve months, and,in
spite of the expenditure being larger
than any since the great war, the sur-
plus was one of the largest known.
The credit of the country nevtr stood
so high."
The Chancellor had
joice. He was able to announce a
surplus of over $20,000,000 and a re-
duction of the national debt by near-
ly $40,000,000. Does that look much
like ruin?
Oa the other hand, Mr. FosTsR was
announcing at Ottawa a deficit of $4,-
153,875, and an addition, to the pub-
lic debt of nearly $7.800,000.
We car.not have " free trade as it is
in England " because of the large sum
that mast be raised each year to pay
the interest on our public debt ; but
let us henceforth try to get somewhat
nearer to the system under which
Great Britain has made such wonder-
ful progress.

Mr. ( NLRB oleo urged the necessity
of making the burden of taxation as
even as possible by taking the taxes
off the necessaries of life and putting
them on the luxuries : condemned the
Dominion Franchise Act : favored the
strengthening of the laws against
bribery, and spoke very strongly
against the expenditure of public
money on useless works such as the
Trent Canal.
A. W. WPtanT was present looking
after the lot -rests of the Government
and delivered a half-hour's speech.
He stated that " there was much said
of the remedial bill granting public
money to Catholic schools, but nothing
of the sort was in the hill." Mr.
081 ER in a word of reply read clause
74 of the bill and asked : Does it or
does it not grant public money to
