IT BEARS FALSE WITNESS.
()1'R esteeuln1 contemporary, the
Clinton News Record, which claims
to bank on the Golden Rule in poli-
tics, says :
" A peculiar feature of the ehctioa was
the fact that Peter Ryan, was among only
the Roma Catholic electors workiag for
Mr Cameroc.'.
This .statement is not in accordance
with either the Golden Rule or that
one of the Ten Commandments which
debars the bearing of false witness.
The Only point at which Mr. RYAN
spoke in Ashfield was Kintail, and
the meeting was two.thirds Protest-
ant Mr. RTAi never raised a word
on the question of creed, and spoke
only as a citizen of the Dominion,
which is more than can be said for

THEY (CME DOWN EASY.
THS Government organs are ea,
deavoring to let themselves down
easy in connection with the defeat in
West Huron. They claim that Wsls-
MLLLaa was not supported, and con-
ducted, practically, a one man cam-
paign is the contest. This statement
is incorrect in every particular.
Walston -tea had everything at his
disposal in the shape of organizatioa
except boodle, and this time neither
Hi RAM WALItsa or any other benefi-
ciary of the Government felt inclined
to "put up " in defence of the Govern -
meat policy.
The contest was placed at the tail
end of the ptocsesion, although West
Huron was the first constituency va-
cant. so that the entire battering fore*
at the disposal of the Government
could be thrown into the riding
against Mr. CAMtltos. Mr Wats-
MILLsa was chosen ea the candidate
by Dr. MONTAOUE, and afterwards
ratified by the Sinith's Hill eonven
tion because, having been a Liberal,
an Equal Righter, and everything
else that was looked upon as a means
of catching votes oat side issues, it was
believed that, with the aid of Govern -
meat boodle and boodl.rs, be would
have ao difficulty in pulling through
with a majority He was possessed
of a fairly glib tongue and an elar
tic eonscience, and being a straddler on
the remedial question it was thought
be would be a winner.
He came to town under the wing of
I)r. Rooms, M. P. for West Middle-
sex, wbo is the Government general
u tility Inas is the West, vies PArrss-
sow reigned, and it was amusing to
see bow the local heeler's cottoned
to him. They talked about him as a
winner, they sang kis praises on every
street corner, they howled of his com-
ing victory from the housetops. They
couldn't be kept quiet until they found
that the contractors would not fur-
n ish boodle.and then—the boldest held
his breath, for a time.

In the face of this it dose not come
with good grace for the Government
supporters to cry, " We didn't get a
chance : wait until next time " in a
general election no such combination
can be put up against M. C. CAMERON.
The slanders that were put in circula-

are exploded, and no sane person now
believes in them. Tns SIGNAL stood
