SHOULD BE TRIED IN PRIVATE. )F late years there has been an epidemic of indecent assault cases. particularly on children, and no part of Canada appears to hate been free from, the evil. Judge STREET, who presided recent- ly at court in Toronto, where cases of the kind mentioned were being tried, evoke very sensibly when `e said : " feel very strongly on this subject, and have long been of the opinion that legislation should be passed giving the presiding judge the power to clear the court if he deems it to be in the in terent of the community." Crown Attorney Uswerr, on the same occas- ion said that " no good purpose is served by admitting the public to the court when criminal assault cams are being tried. Those who have had occasion to view the attendance at assize and other eotlrto held in Goderich when cases of a prurient nature were on trial will concur in the opinion ex premed by the learned Justice and Mr. DswART in this regard, and will testify that the size of the audience when the dirty details were being ventilated was only circumscribed by the sire ed the court chamber.
