day evening last a farewell *octal to Rev.
J. E Howell, 31. .41 , and family was given
in the basement of North -et. Methodist
church. After • large number had par-
taken of refreshment., the program of the
evening pies entered on. Rev. 1►r. Co. oc-
cupied the chair and in • few very appro-
propnate and well chosen remarks express-
ed the pleasure he had had in has associa-
tions with the Methodist church and the
very agreeable fraternal relationship which
hal existed between himself and Rev. Mr.
Howell, and only wished that his, Mr. H.'s,
pastorate over his charge in Goderich could
be continued. Hew. H. Irvine then spoke
of the kindly and brotherly feeling which
had always existed between Mr. Howell
and himself, how well he had been treat-
ed by Mr. Howell for several years pest,
and that both an county and town Mr. H.
had acted towards ham and those under hu
char?* with • noble spirit, and he was sure
that his successor would act in the same
cordal manner. A quartette •'Old Songs,'
was then given by Minces P'ridh.m and
Campaigns and Messrs. 1'ridh•m and smith,
alter which Mine Atken read an address o0
behalf of the E I.. of C. E., which was fol-
lowed by • well rendered duett by Mise

Mr Howell then referred to hu appoint-
ment to the pastorate of North -tet church
when another had been invited, the
cordiality of his reception, the sympathy
fur him and his family in their darkest
hour of trial. the kind feeling that existed
between the pastors of the other churches

An accident which might have proved
fatal occurred on Thursday:- A number of
boys were in swimming .love the rapids in
the raver when Doe of them fell into a deep
hole. He sank twice and was going down
the third time when on of the boys notic-
ed ham and although he cadent swim; very
well went to his assistance and succeeded
in bringing him to shore.

ashore the other day in a fog on the North
shore of Lake Superior, 30 miles above Two
Harbors A wrecking expedition was sent
