Thea there is no insecticide so vo)nable in destroying bugs. plant lite. and the lice which are parasitic upon domestic animals a* is the kerosene emulsion. The beet formula for prepar- ing Dais valuable specific is es follows: 'Inc quart of .oft soap 1 one pint will often do as wens, or Ono fourth pound of hard soap, is theenrviel in two quarts of boil in) water. When this in retnov ol from the fire. one pint of kero seas oil is poured into it, while yet hot. The mixture is then thoroughly stirred until it b.comee permanently :nixed so that the oil will never rise upon standing. We can now dilate this at pleasure, and the oil will not separate and rise to the top. The stirring Gent be done more violently than nen he done with a stick or *peon. If a little is to be made, it can be atir-*4 sufficiently by the use of a common egg beater, but it any considerable quantity in to be pre- pared, the stirring may best be done by the use of a force pump, by the aid of which we pump the lhgaid back into itself with great force. In from three to five minutes after such violent stir ring, the whole mixture appears like rich cream. and we now have a per- manent mixtnre which is called the kerosene emnlaiot►. In using this either on plants or epi mals, it is best to dilute it nntil not more than one -twelfth or one fifteenth of the whole is kerosene oil. In this proportion, while still fatal to most insects, it is en- tirely harmless to the plants. It is often recommended to nee • larger proportion of kerosene oil in making this emalsion- thu., some advise four times as much oil as water. Such a formula works well 11 the oil is not too cold and we use soft water. but with very cold oil weoften fail to get the liquid to emuldfy. Unless we nee soft water the oil separates upon thin tion, while with the formula which I have given above neither of these difld cnities is likely to ooOnr. If the emul Mon is allowed to remain for some time before dilution. it becomes gelatinous and will not mix well in dilating unifies either the emulsion or the dilatant ere one or both heated. The kerosene emulsion is fatal to many bug.. especially the immature forms, to newly batebedecale lice, and to all plant lies. This it is a good remedy for mph ides affecting house plants. In all such cases. it should be applied either with a (ore. pump or syringe. so es to be thrown with torte, else it will not touch every insect, and will not bs,thoroughly offer lit. SPOTS OF SPORT.
