The colonists of New Zealand area hot -
day -making people. There is almost an
average of one r.eogniz.d holiday lois the
month, and it is common predicator all
working people to take two or mote days
at Chridnhaa, New Year and gasser, w
as to make an unbroken playtime of
throe dor four days, including Sunday.
Then the great emus of people give them-
selves up to amusement. Horse races,
athletic epurta, boatraces and excursions
aro earned on in every available spot,
and are attended by large and well-be-
haved crowds.
The oorntunest of all holiday amuse -
meets, however, is a picnic. the sever-
al trades recta and societies have picnics
of their own to which the public are
cordially ts-elrxpuw teethe payment of s
small sum toward the expense of the en-
tertaiuutrnt. It it amusing to the rail-
way traveler to uo e, an he passer
through some pleasant countryside. not
oue or two, but perhaps fifty different
peruke w full swing, each numl..ring
scums or hundreds of guests. It has
1*..- raid with much more truth than is
usually to be fouud in epigrams a this
k.ud, that:
"ln New Zealand people are like cat-
tle. You need only tor[ a Lumber
of them into a pasture and leave them
-alone and they will bo perfectly happy."
On a warm and tempting New 1 ear's
Ley an enterprising burglar might walk
through a New Zealand city and help
himself, undisturbed, to the couteuts of
mart of the houses. Dwellings and
streets are alike deserted, ant the casual
sojourner who dues not understand the
way of the place seeks in vain for some
one to speak to. By 6 or 7 o'clock du the
evening the greets are lively with return-
ing crowds.

THE TELEGRAPH IN AFRICA.
Mow It 1s Proposed to Carry the Wine
Acres, the Coatis...1.
The business {partner of one of the di.
rectors of the company formed to build
the telegraph line from the (..cps to
Cairo pups given a Pall Mall Gazette re-
porter some interesting hhtornation.
Capital has been subscribed to the ex-
tent of £140,000, which is considered
sufficient to carry the line as far as
Uganda.
The materials are now being ordered
in luwlon and will be shipped shortly.
The poles are to be of iron of light con-
struction, in order to out -manoeuvre the
white ants, who would eat away wouden
pollee. From Fort Salisbury the line is
to be carried to Tete, on the Zambesi,
and from thence to Blantyre. There
Consul Johnson will report the result of
his surveys or to the best manner of pro-
ceeding on to Uganda, and the construct-
ing party will have to come to terms
with the natives and Arab. by subsidiz-
ing the chiefs and otters of influence.
There will be nothing in the way of
impenetrable undergrowtbt(or rank vege-
tation to contend with, as the line will
avoid the low country and keep to the
high plateau the entire distance. There
are two alternative routes for the con•
veyance of the materials. Then is good
a ootrtt from the Transvaal to Fort
!3•lisbury, or a stouter route would be
adopted if materials were shipped direct
to Beira, carried along the railway Dow
being built as far as it extends, and then
conveyed the resat of the distance by ox.
wagons. The scheme is being pushed
forward with great activity now.
Core of th. Setbrimas
If you cannot keep your batlhroont
sweet by thorough flushing every day
and by pouring hot .,da water or dissolv-
ed copperas through the pipes about
once a week there must be some serious
trouble with the plumbing. and you
should have it examined at once, writes
Maria Parloa in the July LadiesHomo
Journal. Sometimes th_ pipe in the
kitchen sink is not keptperfectly fres
and sweet, or the closet in the basement
is not properly flushed. If there be trou-
ble auewhere in the waste pipee it w.11
make Itself known all over the house.
Try haying the pipe in the kitchen rink
flushed twice a week with strong soda
water. It should be boiling bot. It will
dissolve and carry off all Inc particles of
pease that may be clinging to the pipe.
ltsseberi.g the Hairs et tee Head.
The old idea that the hairs of the head
are innumerable is thoroughly exploded.
Some years ngo a German ,cientust hail
the patience and somehow had the time
to make a careful investigation of the
subject, and by taking a section of the
scalp and carefully counting the hairs
on it, then making an estimate. he ar-
rived et a tolerable accurate idea of the
number of hairs that grow on the whole
scalp He found that blonde hair was
the finest, and that about 140,000 hairs
of this Dolor grow on the average head:
then brown came next with about 110.-
000, and black followed with 100,000.
Red is the ooarsest there being only about
110,000 bain on the head "of red or
auburn hue."
Why It Is Called "M..a.r-Wrs.ah."
Many people wander why the monkey -
wrench reosived such a name, and
imagine it must have a connection in
some remote way with the animal from
which its cutins designation seems to
be derived. In tact, its name is not
monkey -wrench at all, this being a cor-
ruption of the title originally given is
It was invented by Charles .pocky, d
Williaro.bnrrgg wbo sold tis patent to a
firm that undertook to manufacture and
put It on the market. In honor of the
inventor they called it Moncky wrench,
bat both they and he were soon much
disgusted to find it known as the
monkey- w tench.
