fact that the original of the affidavit on
which the charges tor perjury were laid had
been take. to Toronto by the counsel for

Constable Knox immediately relinquished
his charge to the care of gaoler Dickson
until Wednesday afternoon when he called
for him shortly before 3 P.M., and the case
came on for trial before Horace Horton sod
Joe. Williams, J. P's., and mayor Butler.
When Gore arrived in charge of constable
Knox there were seated in the council

stranger' to the town and people. it seem-
ed that they were also strangers to (:oro,
for although he gave them a quick, furtive

near Taoisto:k, at whose place Ellen Lomas
lived for about two months after leaving
Goderich, and from whom Gore, in his affi-
davit to The Toronto World. sworn be had
obtained certain information against Mr.
Cameron.
Andrew Hermann was the first witness
and his evide.,ce was clear avid explicit.
He spoke with a pronouncedly German
accent, but there was intelligence and
honesty in every answer he mode. Ellen
Iotas had worked for him for either nine
or eleven weeks after June 20, 1891. He
Ind got her from the Stretford Home ; some
weeks after she came his wife discovered
that the girl was pregnant and head his
wife returned her to the Home. He had
never had enquiries made except by Mr.
Merry of the Home who was accompanied
by soother'man who,ha thought,belonged to
the Home,'.ot once • man had called when
be was from home and male enquiries of hie
wife. He (Hermann) did not kno.. Gore -
had never seen him in his life until he saw
him in court. Gore hal been lei kis
hoose in Twvistook, and hat never been
told by him that Mr. Cameron had sed.od
Ellen Lome ; and hid -wife hal never Dor•
roborated soch a statemirirt.
The your German's fsids glowed with
righteous indi &e he denounoel the
statement at bated to him by bore, and
the clever effort of Mr. Johnston to obtain
anything favorable to his client were un-
availing in the extreme.

Gore winced considerably, and quelled be-
