Union are .waking to the fact that Con-

is bound presently to amus alarming pro-

was inclined to belittle the agitation, has
been startled because of the sudden growth
of Unionist sentiment which has been mani-
fested of late, .rad calls for • crusade of

The News :
IT I- AN 14/11 ,/L
Orangeville is not a typical Canadian
town. It is rabidly Oremge red enthusias-
tically l'ouservtive. A mere preputial to
hold an annexation meeting in such • p6we
as that a few years ago would have throw,'
the people into a frenzy of excitement, and
the posting of the notion would have been
the signal fora riot.
.lost how great • change has been wrought
throuvhout the country generally in the in-
terval is shown by the faithful pen picture,
furnished by • News reporter, of the matlx
ennv held in t6is ultra -loyal town last
night. Even more significant. however,
than the fact that an assemblage such u
that described could have taken place is the
brief reference to those grey -headed fann-
ers who paid such close attention to the
speeches of the evening.
The new doctrine has made headway.
The Orange Lodge and the Conservative As-
sociation Wmbmed are powerless to prevent
• meeting being held for the purpose of
hearing it explained, and it has, at lasso,
aroused the interest of • large section of the
farming community. There is no use in
blinking the facts any loner. Annexation
is • live issue in this Dominion today.
The movement is not as yet dangerous,
however, but it will become so in the im-
mediate future if not promptly checked.
The advocacy of commercial union, the ad-
option of which as the policy of the nation
would have led to the obliteration of Can-
ada, wee allowed to go unchallenged for so
long that the country Caine very near pro-
n ouncing in favor of it. We cannot afford
to take such chanoes again. It will not do
to ignore the more pronounced policy pre-
sented for our acceptance today. Argument
for must be met by argument against, and
to this end the most talented end patriotic
toes, men of sound common sense and un-
impeachable standing, must be sent at once
to present the Canadian side of the .tuestion
before the people. if the propaganda now
under way is not checked by argument,
armed force will be required for that
purpose, and that in the immediate future.
But, above a11, a radial change of policy
is imperatively neceesary. There must be
a lessening of the restriction upon com-
merce, anti that at 000e. There is not time
nosy even to diacuas • preferential arrange-
ment with England. The day for that u
past. It is absolutely necessary that the
Dominion (:overnment should at enc. sbo t-
i.h the duty now charged on British im-
ports into this country. This will give re-
lief in many ways. It will enormously
cbe.pen the manufactured goods the farmer
is obliged to buy : it will increase purchases
by ('anada in England ; this increase in
purchases will provide freight for ocean
vessels now coming to this side it. hilliest
for the purpose of taking Canadian tarns
products hack ; with full Mads both ways
ocean freight charges will be reduced, the
cost of sending our products to England
will Ire lessened, and the price received by
our farmers for that produce largely in-
creased in conesiuence. In short the •pur-
chasing power of the consumer's dollars will
be made greater anti he will secure • better
price for that which be has to se1L This
will bring a prosperity heretofore un-
dreamed of, and prosperity will smother all
desire for annexation.
The News is surprised and alarmed that
such a meeting could have been held at the
staunch old Orange Tory town of Orange-
ville. If the gathering had been in some
Crit hive there would not have been so
much room for surprise on the part of our
Toronto contemporary. Then the cry
would have been raised that it was merely
the doing of a few diagruptled Reformers
who had grown weary of sitting in the
cold shades of opposition politically, and
ware willing to raise any kind of agitation
to create • feeling of unrest among the peo-
ple at large.
Rut the holding of • Continental Union

The county town was honored last Thurs-
day with the presence of the notorious E.
A. Macdonald, the annexationist apostle of
Toronto, who came as the guest of his fel-
low oonpire.tor of North street, the latter
having attended the " party's " caucus in
Toronto some time ago, and the two hob-
nobbed about town and dismmmed the teak-
bility of holding a meeting in Goderich to
advocate their traitorous cause. The Bar-

to work for any object that had not money
in it, and the more swag there was insight,
the greater their real. It is pretty safe to
say that none of the gang, from Elgin My-

man, is working now without pay, and
that pay comes from U. S. schemers. who
are playing • .inlet game for big stakes, bar
ing been disappointed in their hopes ofac-
complishing commercial union first --The

Ontario); that Mr. M seno.N tort. esu not on a
campaign tour, but attending to his pri-
vate landed interests in this county, which
have been somewhat affected by the depre-
ciation in land values in this section : that
the question of " swag " u not involved, nor
was it referred to in any way, or the
" swaggist " of the Star might have been
called in ; that as to the question of " pay
from the U.S ," we regret to say there
is no development in that direct ion at present.
When it comes about we will let the poor
devil who runs The Star know all about it,
and it won't take long for his present
" lie -oust " policy to be reversed. Hie drew
his " pay " in the United States before, and
would gladly do so again, if he got the
chance. But the yarn is as near tae truth
as " Truthful James " ever gets.
