During his sojourn Mr Lawson saw many
of the old residents of Goderich and
of this vicinity, talking with them of the
many changes which have taken pleas
sins nearly 56 years ago. Before leav•
1oq for his bowie, Aberdeen, Scotland,
after an absence of some mouths, Mr
Lawson intends seeing other pioneers of
Huron now residing at other points in
Ontario, In health and strength Mr
Lawson is hale and hearty, though past
eighty years of age.

ready for sowing fall wheat.
Mr John McWhinney and his mother,
of Crewe, Ashtield, were the guests 01
Mr Richard Jewell on Sunday last.
Mr Dave Fisher left on Friday for
the States with a carload of valuable
horses.
Oa Friday evening about 8 o'clock the
sawmill belonging to Mr N. Morrish was
discovered to be on fire. Messrs J.
Levy and N. John., who were passing,
saw the tire and at once acquainted the
owner. It with got ander control, how-
ever, before it got far, as water was
near. It is supposed that a spark blew
out of the furnace before they quit
work and got to the saw -dust, which
burned cool it aught the wood.

Loewe, Sept. 3. -At a meeting of trades

CHICAGO, Sept. 1 -About 44b0 union car-
penters
rpenters are now on strike. Over 4000 strikers
have been allowed to return to work for

ing the eight-hour day.

President O'Connell of the Carpenters' Coun-
cil bas bees forced by the discontent of mem-
bers of the union to resign.

NEW Yogi. Sept 3. -The State Board of
Mediation and Arbitration to -day rammed
its investigation of the New Tork' Central
strike. General Manager Tonoey testified
that he had an interview with Lee some tiles

watering of the company's stock, intimating

money and that he and the other men ought
