result was that they found his estate hag
been well-managed, his bool-s in periec

rmntrtutlon., his walk in lite without re
prvoach, all his obligations diacbareed
and his securities absolutely devoid o
anemonees. With these conditions t
would have been strange indeed had the
people of Ontario done otherwise than
they have done. But the people of Out
arlo would have done otherwise had the
wrest monetary and social institutiot
whispered to them that Mowat was ur•.
safe. The banks. the insurance com-
panies, the holden of bonds, shares •od
trusts, the churches even. must have
been on Mr Mowat's side or he coal,' not
have won the election. It was because
these gave the nod of approval to thr
leading men in each community that the
groups voted as they felt right. I filly
in odd places like Hamilton, when cer-
tain lnfluencee concentrated their
strength, there was en adverse verdict.
'Ir Meredith made a profound tactical
mistake in his London speech.snd, when
at Toronto he chivalrously adhered to
the platform be had laid down, he may
have imagined that he torched the popul-
ar heart. Perhaps he did. But there is
something more sensitive than the popu-
lar heart and that is the popular pocket.
Not that Meredith is esteemed m'•re o.
less honest than Mowat, but becau.e
business, property and wealth felt an ad-
monition of disturbance. Herein lies
the secret of Mower's success, and it
proves that. In this year of grace at all
events. men can put- away their pre-
judices when they take alarm (Jr their
deposits. It may be said that so simple
a truism needed no proof, but the poli-
ticians seem to hare thought that it did,
and now that they have got it, we can
only hope that it will d„ therm good.
Viewed altogether spot from mere par-
ty issues, there are tew mien but will ad-
mit that tt is wen that Mowat has been
sustained. A dangerous ag(tate..n
hre•tened to divide our people, end,
hough it is .lunte possible that, had Mr
Mereuith's party succeeded, lie would
have adopted a policy in effect precisely
he same as that followed by her Mowat,
rankling soreness would have been es-
abiuhed in the mtods of s powerful
min purity. But the people of Ontario,
oder wise direction, demnatrated their
confidence in their fellow -countrymen
whose good faith has been impugned,
red, as • result, we find a tirmer bond
,f friendship established them ever es•
used before. It will probably take the
partisans of the defeated sone time be-
an they can realise the full meaning of
he 'moral we are endeavoring to draw
rom their misfortune. But, as a candid
Confederate soldier said the other day.
