A Good Medium.--Dr. G. C. Shan-
non is a firm believer in the efficacy of
advertising. Nearly a month ago he lost
a pair of spectacles which could not be
replaced outside of the large cities, and
after enquiring for them and positing
other means of disoovenng then where-
abouts without avail decided to try the

THE LATE D. M. Malloch -The
death of D. MacGregor Malloch, In-
spector of Public Schools for North
Huron, occurred at Clinton on Monday
morning last. The immediate cause of
dealt was apoplexy. Mr Malloch was
born in Renfrew county 56 years ago.
He taught school in various pares of the
Province. He had occupied thakmeitioo
of Public School Inspector for North
Huron for 'boot am years, previous
to which he had been principal of Clin-
ton publio school tor about 16 years.

was highly esteemed by all who knew
him. A number of friends from Gods-

lodge, to which order the deceased be-
longed, attended his funeral at Clinton
on Wedneeday afternoon.

stopped, and by eight o'clock there was

interest in knowing what kind of
speaker he was, and the universally ex-
pressed opinion was that be had greatly
exceedei their anticipations. No intel-
ligent man could listen to Mr Garrow
without being convinced of the honesty
of his arguments, his evident (airflow in
discussion, hie courteous and b000rable
treatment of his opponents and his man-
ly, straightforward presentation of hit
platform, sod the majority of those who
listened to him were fully convinoed that
he will make an excellent representative
for the West Riding of Huron.

There was • good meeting at Carlow
on Tuesday evening, and the gathering
was graced with the presence of quite •
number of ladies. Ex- Iteeve Young was
rooted to the chair by veteran John
Morris and half -a -dozen seconders.
Messrs Garrow and McGillicuddy addres-
sed the gathering on the issues ot the
day, their speeches being enthusiastic-
ally received. The address of bit Gar -
row waa particularly effective on the
Separate School question, and laid bare
many of the fallacies advanced by the
Tory stompers. His clear-cut sentences
and honest sentiments gained for him the
good -will of even those who were opposed
to him politically, and when he took his
seat at the end ot an hour and thirty-nve
minutes,the general opinion was that his
election on Juoe (ith would be • credit
to the Riding. Mr McGillicuddy dealt
briefly with some of the questions which
the Tory stompers are dragging into this
campaign, and the meeting closed with
oheers for Mowat, °arrow sod the
Queen. Colborne is solid fur Garrow.
ROBERTS' MEETINGS.

There was • good attendance at this
poiat at the first Conservative meeting of
the campaign on Friday evening last.
That genial old Irish Tory, Mr. Jamas
Patton, occupied the chair in hie own in-
imitable way. The order was good. Mr
Roberts, the Conservative candidate, op-
ened the meeting in a tweaty-minute
speech, and was replied to by Mr. Mc-
Oillicaddy,t on behalf of Mr. °arrow- -
three-quarters of an hour being allowed.
In addition to the speakers of the even-
ing there was a Onderich oontingent re.
presented by Dr. Shannon, F. W. John.
. 1'.and H. W. Rail, and Haltfordi end
was held up by Reeve Reck and Mr. Jer-
rie. The meeting was closed by trounty-
treasurer Holmes in • speech of about an

Peter Stuart, teacher of No. 5, at-
tended the meeting held hut Saturday,
of the teachers in Colborne to decide on
hooting • grand picnic at the Point Fara
similar to that of last year, with like sports
and , for the scholars, not for-
getting sail boats to be in attendances,
as before. The results of the meeting
saw his counsel endorsed by one or two
school teachers of Ashlield and Wawa -
nosh, so the number of schools promis-
ing attendance is ten and four more to
hear from. The i eo far are
to have the Goderich band to head the
march of the scholars into the grounds
of the Point Farm in procession. After
the touting Mr Stuart got over half the
amount subscribed toward the band ex -
pease& We think • grant of money to-
wer& the sports from the township
council wouldn't be out of place. Should
the council meet on the 28th, we hope a
grant will be considered. The day fixed
for the picnic is the 131h of June,
