Like a belt from • clam sky, no Mos day haat, came word to the public that Hon. A. M. Rnw, had decided to retire from political Ida A week previous be was in town apparently a candidate sell of life and vigor, bat inside of a brief seven days po:itial inanition had set in sad be hod decided to resign the pub- lic position as member for West Huron which he has held for the pent fifteen years. Bot although the public were takes by surprise Tue SiCMMAL was not. On Feb. 'Sth we gave a warning note that a oon- vention ahould be called, as then was r*a.00 10 believe ME. Rose would seek retirement at the dose of the present parliament, as follows It may be said that West Huron has practically • candidate in the field in the penwn of Hon. A. M. Rows, the present member, but this is no reseou why chancel should be taken, so far as the Riding is 0000erned. No man is a can- didate for any position until he has an- nounced himself so to be. and up to date Mr Row' has given no sign that he will °outlaw) in public Id. after the expira- tion of the prseout legislature. If be has dune so. Tut SIm.At. has certainly heard nothing of it. But we have heard. and so have any of our readers, that it is quite possible Mr Ross may not again taste upon himself the ares and worries of public life, and in the absents of any definite i on the subject, or any .tetement to the contrary on the part of the Provincial Treasurer, we believe it is the beat policy to have matters so ar- ranged that even the voluntary retire- ment of the sitting member will act effect the fate of the constituency at the coming election. • • • • • s • Thus it will be seen that an immediate meeting of Lite West Huron Reform Association, and the early placing of a candidate in the field is an absolute necessity. If Hon. A. M Roes is again to be the candidate ot the Reform Party in West Huron, it is only right that his should know it. If, on the other hand, be has tired of public office, or on account of physical infirmity or oth- er causes he no longer will be s candidate to West Huron, no time should be lost in calling the Convention together and ' to make the rough places smooth for his successor. The warning passed unheeded and dis- regarded by the executive end Mr hoes gave so sign. Lett on the fact that Mr Ross' tenure of office was becoming mon frail day by day, became apparent, and again, 00 April 411., THs SIGNAL raised cry against the almost criminal neglect of the Reform executive in to call a . Speaking of the lethargy that existed in oertain constitu- encies, the following statement ap- peared :- R. S. WILL.AMS, MANAGER. and approved by the Convention at the earliest possible date.' And still the executive of the Reform party slumbered, and Mr Rosa, who knew the constituency was quietly rest- inq over a political volcano, made mo Digo. Now we are on the edge of an elec- tion which promises to be short and sharp. The fears cf Tse SIGNAL that the convention would be left so late, that in the event of attempting to "swap horses crossing the stream," com- plications would ariee, have been verified. All is 09w hum and bustle. As the conatitoeocy is looked upon as a rate one, the crop of candidates threaten& to be large. Had more time been given an amicable adjustment of claims might have been had, and much bitter- ness of spirit saved. The old style of wirepulting is now re- sorted to in at least one quarter by the candidate and hia friends, and there is nu knowing what the outcome will be. With a united party, and • candidate the honest choice of an honest conven- tion, opposition in the shape of a Tary candidate would be worse than useless ; bot without unity of purpose and the strongest candidate, an anooytng factions opposition, if nothing worse, may result. We claim that a mistake was made in sot calling the earlier, and giving the new Reform aodidate, who- soever he may be, a better chapoe to gc over the riding. But that is • thing too late to remedy. What is wanted now is united action -not town against town or section against section. If a number of candidates go before the convention well and good. but let the rivalry be a friend- ly one, fair, open, and above board. TUE irIRE-PCLLER UST GO. The tion of a is • public trust. and should be control- led by no individual or clique. The electorate at Targe, through its chosen . should alone have the power to select the candidate, and con - ter the honor. In a riding like :Vest Huron, where • Liberal nomination means certain election, any attempt on the part of an aspiring candidate to tamper with possible delegates should be , frowoeddown. Eve'ydele- gate to $ political oonvention shook! go unpledged, and be governed in his selec- tion by the strength and worth of the candidates who are presented to the convention. Thee* thoughts are brought to our mind by the fact that too often in there is a system of pipe- laying and wlnpolling indulged in by some of the candidates, the result being that the most skilful wirepuller or the most barefaced canvasser will secure the t o regardless of merit, and of just claims. West Huron may be no exception to the rule, and for this reason we throw out this note of warning so that dele- gates to the Reform convention at (.ode rich on May 5th may come unpledged and prepared N judge honestly and just- ly as to the claims of esndidates. We understand that already the ward heeler and touter are afoot towards packing the , but we hope the efforts of each p.rsoos will be frown. ed down. i'p to the present several names have been mentioned, and we give them with. out comment, so that our readers may be prepared to mak• choice when the time arrires : J. T. GARROW, Q C., Goderich. M. G. CAMERON, barrister, Gode rich. A. 11. MANNING, solhiitotr, Clinton. PHILIP HOLT, barrister, Godmt.h. D. McOILLLCI'DDY, editor, node rich. Any one of them is com- petent to represent the Riding. and we trove to the delegates of the convention task of selecting. The roan who an carry the largest majority in the+ event of a waist should boome the choiee of . the convention whether it sola the wire - pollees or not. - Peeked eoev.ntione will not be nub gritted to by the intelligent electors. Let there be a fair Geld and ao beer. The wirepuller milt ge. ' • West Huron is one of these constltu- escies, for up to date no word of a nomi- nating for either of the poli- tical parties has been vouchsafed. There appears to be an anxiety on the part of each cf the political factions to know who the candidate of the other will be be- fore • tion for the purpose of oo eirating $ standard-bearer is held. Many of the Reformers up to date are calculating upon Hon. A. M. Roan being still open to candidature, notwithstand- ing the rumors of bis retirement from public life which have been prevalent of late, but then are numbers who look at his retirement as amongst the possibili- ties, and who have undertaken to look about for an eligible candidate in the event ot his withdrawal. The Reform party is not lacking in good material for reprsasntatives even should the sitting member see fit to retire, and the party would not be without reeouree should thepr•aeni it.eambest decline to be • asdidate at the fnrthooming contest It is trite tree that the priories that at taebse to an old many member, whot'ashas POR• o ser the grow emceeswily gives hies a states, bet the fact of having • record, ..f one kind o, other, Is often • .oaree of embaees rather than strength to the old member.
