ASSURANCE COMPANY.
The annual meeting of the North American We Assurance Company was held
at the Head Office of the Compaoy, Toronto, oi. Tuesday, Jan. 28, 1800. The
meeting was largely attend.d by P.•lic)-holders, Directors, Guarantors and princi-
pal reprrsetttatives of the Company.
In the absence at Ottawa .4 the Hon. Alex. Mackeizie, M.P., John L
Blaikie, Lep, Vice -President, was aup.tnted chairman aid W *a. McCa..e secr.tary,
when the following report was submitted :
In i , "". , their Ninth Atoms! Report, the Directors feel justified in de -
skein that the oondstiou and denerel business of the C,.mpsny ars entirely satis-
factory. During the year, 1682 spplseatiuos for $2.707,900 were received, upon
watch were issued 1630 p.lit eau. for $1 b98,217. This is an ammonia of new businers
is exon of that of any former year and is specially grattfyios in new o. the 6osn-
cial stringency of the last quarter of the year.
During the past year, large iocrae.es have been made in every branch of the
Company's bwitiess.
The total resources .4 the Company, including the Guarantee Feed of $300,-
000, now exceed Os. M11hon Dollars ; thus furnishing a relative security to its
policy bolder I by civet of any company on the continent.
The large increase in the lssets of the Company Dm been by cash invested in
hest , thereby making the Company's accumulated investments of a char-
acter unexcelled by arty other.
The large amount of bootees' done .n the Company's sesi-tontiee investment
policies shows that the public fully appreciate this plan of insurance aad realise its
many ad.sntages. This C .wpany clams to bale been the Bret Heine C..mpeny to
introduce to Canadians this method of susurance, under which several policies were
issued dentin the very first year of the Company's exiatenoe. Since that date,
nearly every other Home Company has adopted, ander one name or soother, -the
admirable form of tosurance.
The reports of the Superintood•ot of Insurance show that millions of dollars are
anomaly paid to Foreign C•.enpaaies and by them set.1 oat of the country. In the
way we •re not only depnt,•d Of • tarps part of our available and much-ne.ded
capital, but foreign compec.tore are built op therewith As the reserves and re-
sources of Home Companies are neo s.-nly invested altogether to Canada under
our own laws and crura, all patriotic Canadians should oertsisly give such com-
panies their support an preference to foreign competitors.
Dr. Jamar Tbtorburn+ the Company's able and ezperieoeed Medical Director, has
prepared he usual report of the Company's mortality etpertesoe.
Reports of the Company s business for the year were, es heretofore, mailed to
the Government promptly atter the aloes of business for the year.
The same minute and thorough audit of the sources of toa.me and expenditure
and eompl•ie examination of the property of the Company, established by thel
directors from the co.amencemcot of business, has beeo oontiotted .,.d made her
geotlemeo of large expeneoce, appointed as Auditors by the annual now ing, a 4
in addition the Standing Committee of the Bo.rd has also veri6+d n1 nloe unw.wt
its accounts and securities. Their several eertifuates are attached to the behoove
. hast
The Directors record with deep regret the deoes.e of the Hon. Alezaodel
Morris, (j C., its first Vice -President, and a member of its Ieadtng eoe.amnee
since the Company's organization, and bear willing testimony to the valuable
e rvioes rendered by bin: to the Company by his wise counsel and Targe eaperleuu.'
The Uirectora have declared a dividend at the rate of Eight per cent. per an
num, payable half -yearly to the Guarantors, as interest on the paid -op portion of
the Guarantee Fund.
The services of the Company's staff of Officers, Iasp aloes and .t.
deserve favorable recognition.
The Directors all retire but are eligible for re-eiectien.

And here let use remark that nt.iho•t awl' he more satisfactory then the zeal
and shiltty displayed by oar Medical Director, Dr. Tborhurn, who is most un-
wearied and painstaking in guarding the interests of the Company in this met im-

The business in fore as et Dec. 310 amounts to $9068,863.00 !being an in-

Taking into consideration the kepi and at tunas realms competition that has
prevailed, aid the scanty of money dense the last three months of 1889. the re

While it is the policy . f the Company's t to do an active and in-

too much to secure life insurance as ru pay too meek (nosey other commodity. To
