Tb• schools are badly ven- tilated, poorly heated and sot kept close The Provincial Board of Health In a re- port to the Minister of Edmonton in Jan.. 1889, says -"During the cold sa- ss all schools is Ontario should be heat- ed with steam, bot water or air heated by a furnace. A regulated system of intro- ducing ntroducing pure air foto the school room and withdrawing foul air, should in all oases be secured. Tb. drinking Miler wed by the school children should be analyz- ed from time to time, and if fused am- pere it should be immediately disponi/no- ed. We would specially mire scrubbing of the shoal floors at least once a week. Sweeping should always be done at night. the floors having been first sprinkled, and the sato and desks should be dust- ed with a damp cloth oo the following morning. The dents, stets and walls should be kept &crapulously clean, the latter being brushed down with • damp brush or cloth weekly. In addition :o thews 1 that all the cracks la the floors should be filled up with petty. The floors sbou:d ales be snaked with boiling oil several times, until they be- come hardened. Hard wood doors are preferable, All privy pits should be cleaned out, disinfected and filled in with dry, clean earth. Where water or dry air systems ars .M mod dry earth closets shall be , 1 The con- struction of dry earth closets may its varied to suit circumstance*, but the box or pail mot be water tight for the ex- creta, and dry earth, coal or wood ashes or saw dust scattered over the excreta every day. Pure sand is valueless. Dirty floors and badly ventilatel school roams 000tribure to the spread of con- sumption. The bacili of tuberculoid. rise with the dust, and rioter the respir- atory pessag.s, to be introduced into the circulation. Thus the dread disease which heeds the list in the rate of mor- tality in Ontario, causing about 12 per cent. of our annual death rate, may be in the air of the school room. Trustees, teacben and parents ahosld consider all these startling facts and, er- mine carefully the condition of their school house end privies. Teaeben and children are often surprised wheal speak plainly to them of the danger to their health no account of the filthy state of the scIool room and closets. Many teachers and trustees never give any attention to these matters, and do not seem to tare whether they are clean or not it s part of the duty of the teacher to look deer these things, and report to the tfult when they need attention. Many trustee boards allow, yes compel, delicate children to et for hears each day in • room which was swept at noon or before nine o'clock.
