The agitation among the New Lt'r.g- land eaaufaeturen fur the repeal of the duties on coal and iron ore is Reboot( strength leery day. The Massachusetts weavers of woollen and worsted yarns have chimed in -at least already over one-third of them have dune so -with $ demand for the repeal of the duty oo raw wool. Mr Sank, the statistician of the Iron and Steel Association of Pennsylvania, • protectlooist organiza- tion, tries to make it appear that the repeal of these duties would be of no service to the manufacturers, inasmuch WI "they could not we Nova Scotia coal, coke or iron eon if they got them for nothing." TOM absurd assertion leads the Boston herald to retort that in tate ease there is no necessity at all for ex- cluding those Canadian products, and the duties upon tbetn might as well be abolished. The mauutactttrers, who may be supposed to know their own ba• sinew, say there would be an enormous demand for Canadian raw material, and point to the import figure, during tate existence of the treaty of 18:4-66. Any treaty of reciprocity most come from the United States Senate, and the fact that New England has twelve members in that body, or nearly oils -sixth of the whole, is an encouraging one for the friends of closer trade relations. Some of the protectiooista on the Can- adian side of the line are as unreasona- ble and reckless as Mr Swank. They pretend to say that the New England market would oat be of much benefit to the Maritime Provinces. Consider- able light can be obtained on this branch of the question by • perusal of the sta- tistics for Massachusetts as furnished by the Stats census taken in 1886 The entire capital invested in Ma.saehosetts industries is $600,304.000; 380.000 hands are employed: and the product in 1885 amounted in value to $674,634,000. The leading indoMries are those of cotton goods, boots and shoes, clothing, food preparations, furniture, leather, machin- ery and metallic goods, paper, dyeing and bleaching, woollens and worsted goods. Canadian protectionists boast of the Manitoba market which they have secured for the older provinces by im- posing •'sernss duties upon the settler. It happened that • special census .1 the Northwest Territories was taken in 1885. the same year as the State census of Massachusetts, and a epeeist census of Manitoba the year after. The Territo- ries onetain 45.400 persons, of whom 20,400 are Indians. and Manitoba 108, 600, of whom 15.000 are Half -breads and Indians. The total amount of apt tal invested in menu:sharing in de stries in the Territories ie given as $771,000, and in Manitoba as 53.4711.• 000. The number of hands emplaced to beth plates is under three tli.ousse•l. if the Northwest market te $ valuable one, what of the market afforded by the sin gee State of Masssckagpfta, to say moth tag tot lbs other New England Mali. or .t the rest of the Amsriesn i'nice 1 Ae- carding to the Canadian len... of 1881 the espial i...Med to min eifsrtming on - der ltiee is the whole Domenico' was $1116,300.030, the ■umher of hands mm - played 1114,0110. sur th. anneal rains rd time prnd.et $310,1111,0(10 Rens if ww m;p the eltn.agnst ammismw.a that tame is Wee as _itch sspital Jammed now and twice as se..b produced, it will be semi that in point of industrial dr %elopeaent M•machusetts alone not strips Gorda at large. Facts of this kind show how ridiculous Canadian pro- tectionists can make themselves in area - INF anima reciprocity with our best market The Boston Globe (Dem.) esti- mates that after five years of reciprocity ten million tons of Nova Scotia coal would be imported into the United States, sod from three to five million tons of iron ora The leather, Mursitsr., paper, woollen, and other industries would draw • great deal of their raw material from us ; and factories of vari- ous kinds would doubtless be started in Canada at the source 4 supply. The whole subject will some up for discussion in Congress, which meets in December, on the presentation of the petition of the New England manufac- turers for cheap coal, iron and wool. The selfishness of the few cannot much lotgerlprsystl against the intelligent self- itterest of the many. If the Liberal party were in power at Ottawa it would be an easy matter for us to obtain reci- procity u1 some sort within the next two or three years ; but the present Govern- ment is entangled with the tariff.fd manufacturers who feel that if the prin- ciple of reciprocal trade be recognized at all, its logical extension and application to the entire exchange between the two countries is only a ques.ioa of time. Hunger for good American short stories can be satisfied by the feast of this species of literature to be found in the October N umber of Harper's Maga- eine. Edward Bellamy contributes • sketch entitled "With the Eyes Shut," which, even if the writer's name were not given, would betray, in the original- ity of its conception, rho author of "Looking Backward ;" Annie Trumbull Simeon develops a fanciful idiot in ' Rutterneggs," which abe further de scribes in a sub -title as "A Story of Heredity ;" Margaret J. Freston tells, in "Aunt Dorothy's Funeral," of obse- quies wbich "man proposed,' but which were subeequeotly celebrated with joy and merriment ; and Mn Lucy C. Lillie, in "Captain Brooke's Prejudice," relater the story of a caprice and its consequen- ces to two lovers. Hunger for good artistes and illustrations will also be satisfied by the contests of this Number of fierper's. Professor Charles Eliot Norton, of Harvard University, presents a paper upon "The Building of the Church of St. -Dania," involving an in- teresting analysis of the period and of the rise of ''the new and glorious style' of Gothic architecture. Two authors are their own artists Howard Pyle describing, with pen and pencil, "A Peculiar People --a German Baptist eset-the Dunker, of Pennsyl- vania ; and Tristram Ella, what he saw on • visit to "Ha.rapolis and its White Terrace." Edwin A. Abbey illuitratee, with nine drswiogs, "The Noble Pat- rols," by Austin Dobson ; and Alfred Parsons embellishes in like manner Wordsworth's sonnet, "Hail Twilight" Howard Hall contributes a poem enti- tled "All's Well at the Earth ;" and Lucy Iarc.m another entitled "Dir oovery," which looks to the hero of 1492. George William Curtis and Wil- liam Dean Howells the month both speak of recent publications, and also certain subjects leering upon Oar country.
