FRIDAY, OCT. 4, 1499.
THE LIBERAL LEADER.
The reception given to Hon. Wilfrid
Laurier, the leader of the Reform party
in the Dominion Parliament, in Toronto
on Monday night, goes far to prove that
h. retains the confidence and esteem of
the people of Ontario. The manner in
'which he acquitted himself on the oc-
casion is also conclusive evidence that if
ability and integrity are essentials to a
great political leader, Mr Laurier pos-
sesses these qualifications in a marked
degree. Hie address from beginning to
end breathed s f t loyalty, a spirit
of:brotherly feeling, and s conception of
duty to country rarely found in plat-
form utterances by politicians. There
was no claptrap, no retailing of ancient
gats std stale jokes, no attempt to curry
favor with the masses and to tackle the
ears of the groondliops, but an earnest,
manly presentation of facts, which gain-
ed for him the respect of his ..dienoe, if
A did not wholly convince them on his
line of argument.
The elucidation of the Jesuits' Estates
Act was lucid io the extreme, and al-
though be spoke in the ultra -Protestant
city t1 Toronto and made no apology or
palliation for his course in Parliament,
he succeeded in carrying the sense of the
mooting with him in his presentation of
the case. He spoke .bore prejudice,
above bigotry, above fanaticism, and
spoke as a conscientious, broad-minded,
faithful steward should. We especially
commend that portion of his address to
the perusal of the blatent orators, who
bare ip most iustaoees taken an adverse
view of this g1eation, and ask them in
future dissuasions to endeavor to imitate
the cater, diepsmiouste and argumenta-
tive methods of the great Liberal leader.
the .sentiments were lamed and lofty,
and nn eridenee of religious rancor
borne of creed or dogma was observable.
He was a Frenchman by birth, tat her
Will a Canadian first, last and all the
time ; he was • Cith..ito by birth
and training, bet a Christian by (lead's
grace, and his Christianity was broader
then his creed, in the same manner taut
his nationality as a Canadian was broad
er than his accident of birth and extrac-
tion.
ua the question of politics he laid
down a pbetform of one plank, bot that
platform is beard enough for every wall -
wisher ..t Clar'ada to stand up•.n-C.oati-
n.ntal Free Trade. The following sfe

leA1PS ; Mai if the Liberate of today sea
achieve what they now have in view, and
proclaim ale Ili ptiaoipie• of eo•tiaee-
tal has trade, they will have don a
great good to the eoaatry, the wit!
bare conferred a boon oe the they
roes` sad they will have benefited man-
kind ; they will have performed a ser-
vice of which they will have every rea-
son to be proed.
I am a Frank -Cans•
dias, apes res r a Caasdiso, and I say
to ay fellow -Canadians that the nurse
the great Liberal party should pursue is
that which will best lead towards the
speedy attainment of this great object,
an alliance of the whole British rase up-
on the face of the earth ; and if we ob-
tain ac alliance, a oommersial alliance,
between Canalised the United States,
we shall have Sited one link of the
chain ; but we should sot be notified
until ring after ring hes bees added, not
until with a strong chain we have *D-
ebated the whole globs. But I hale
done, sod while I have represented that
the condition of our country caonot be
viewed except with some little degree ut
anxiety and alarm, yet all of us, what-
ever our creed, whatever our race, what-
ever our Province, if we only bring our-
selves up to the level of trusting each
other, of having confidence in our own
better nature and having a better cpinion
of such other, we +hall have good caw
for hope in the future. I shall newer
be disturbed by wild talk whether
in Quebec or Ontario ; it is osly
wild talk ; it is only the safety -valve by
which the extra steam will escape and io
no harm- when the excitement hes sub-
sided. Let us remember that, thoogb
divided by different tenets and of differ-
ent religious creeds. we all worship the
same God. Let us remember that,
though divided in religious form, still
we all believe in Him wits came to earth
to bring to mew peace and good will, and
il we are true to those teachings we shall
be ready to make all allowance for the
differences, it may be, for the prejudices,
of our fellow-ooentrymeo, and we shall
have every confidence in the !attire of
our great country. For my part, I shall
never lose hope in the future of our
growing country. (Prolonged cheering.)
A COPT of the minutes of the West
Huron Teacher; Association, held on
Sept 19th, reached as on Wednesday,
Oct 2. If the secretary of the Teachers,
Association wants to hare the minutes
appear in print io THE SIONAL be will
have to wake up. We are under no
obligation to print the report, but
have ro objection to do so when the
matter A famished within reasonable
time. Bat two weeks after date doesn't
suit us in this age of regular mail service,
and we decline to publish it now and on
.11 other occasions where a similarly
slow -pokey policy is pursued.
COLBORNE BRANCH AG. SOCY.
The irlae ILt of tie Pall !Mew.
Below we give the prize list of the
Colborne Branch Fall chow, held •t
Smith's Hill last Wednesday and Thurs-
day. The attendance the eeeond day
was very good, the broncho ponies of
Lasso Mack crating great interest.
rbc show of stock was perhaps equal to
formal years, bat the indoor departments
showed a considerable falling off, parti-
cularly in lathes work, which has hither-
to boo one of the best displays at this
show. Roots and vegetables were very
creditable, and dairy produce very good.
The weather on Thursday afternoon in-
