and this hostility had worked inimt
tally to the interests of the town. The
result was chau. so fu as ib. railway agi-
tation was c000eroed. But when the bones
to the Organ Company was broached, it
was seen that united action alone could
secure the majority t.q.ired by .tatste
to carry the bylaw, and it was decided
that all must torn in and work or defeat
was inevitable. Theo there was a clasp-
ing of hands and joint action on the part
of men who hitherto had been at daggers
drawn. The Town Council called upon
the residents of the town to join with
them in organizing for thorough work,
sad the people nobly responded to the
call.
Tex Sle•.AL has preached the gospel
of railway extension to Goderich, for
competitive purposes, io season and out
of season, for many yesrs. Several
times we have been within measurable
distance of accomplishing the great end,
but some inopportune act on the part of
our people has interfered with the suc-
ess of the plan. Today we believe the
scheme is again ripe, and with united
action the long deferred competitive line
can be secured. We are in a position to
state that even at this late day a syodi-
cate is prepared to take up the laps-
ed charter, and carry on the road
is completion. All that is now re-
quired is that the provisional direc-

defunct c:tarter, and the projectors of

The Board of Trade, which, durt
the past year, has manifested conoid'

notice of definite action, and we hope
its next meeting to learn that it bas p

It is claimed by aorta•, that if we wait
long enough -until the projects in hand
by the C. P. i:. at present are complet-
ed -the line from G t.aiph to Goderich
will he taken up v.,luntatily by the C.
P. e.. and pushed to completion. Such
may be the fact, but in the history of
railway building we learn of no railway
owned by a private company that was
eve. built to any point without the co
operation and energetic work of the pe..
pie who were to be benefitted by th
building of the road. Godench has
waited, and waited hope, but waiting has
not brought the competitive railway.
