Dien IN TEXAS. -A telegram was re-
ceived by Mr F. W Johnston, inform-
ing him of the death of his father, Hugh
Johnston, formerly of this town. The
late Hugh Johnston was well known by
all the old settlers of the Huron tract,
having for many year been a resident
of the section, and a prominent figure in
local polities. Some years sumo he
located in Texas, and, in conjunction
with hts sons, went largely into cattle
ranching io that State.

cursioo to Pon Huron on Thursday of
last week, under the auspices of the I. G.
() F., was largely attended and success-
ful throughout. The weather was fine,
the accommodation on the Campana good,
and the conduct of the excursionists ex-
emplary. The annual excursion to
Sarnia and Port Huron is becoming •

after the lapse of a few minutes they got

ounds, Mitchell working away off his
course when near home and Trethewey
being cheered. After the lapse of about
20 minutes the two winners pulled out

derson winning the toss chose the north
side. Henderson's fine and steady
stroke bad won him many admirers, and
Tretheitey'a sinewy frame and good pull
also made many pick him out as the
whiner. They gut away well together
and both bent to their oars in good style.
Trothsweg worked off his course a little
and as they worked sway up the course
towards the turning buoys Henderson
got a little the advantage. He was brat
to torn and was closely followed by
Trothewey. Coming home they both
put in thew best licks. Darkness had
about settled and it was difficult to keep
the °cur's. Along they came with
Henderson increasing his load and com-
ing in winner by considerable distaste.
It was so dark that he did not come so

but passed to the outside of the latter.

DEATH 01 COLONEL WALKER OF LON-
DON.- Colonel Walker, of London, Out.,
who went with fume friends two
weeks ago to fish at Grand River, (jos ,
was struck with paralysis on August Orb,
and Wednesday evening, the 14th, did
at Mr J Carberry's, Grand River. Mn
and Mies Walker arrived in the afternoon
but were too late to be recognized by the
sufferer, who died about two hours after
their arrival.

mill recently erected in Brampton by
1 Pearen Bros., of which firm Mr J. W.
Pearen, formerly of this town, is a mem-
ber :-Steam was got up in the new flour
mill last week and everything moved off
first-rate. So well has the sbafting and
machinery been 'toed that two men on
the main belt can move all the machin-
ery in the building. For several days
the mill has been running light to ena-
ble the machinery to wear to its bear-
ings and hecyme thoroughly oiled. The
Pearen Bros. hope to start grinding
wheat today.

A meeting of the shareholders of the
Goderich Dreams Company was held in 1
the council chamber on Muoday evening, 1
August 12, for the purpose of thorough-
ly organizing the c.wpaay, and electing i
• pernaueut board of directors. The
attendance was large. After the stoek-
book bad beau signed by the sharehold-
ers present, it sou

ed by Mr R. S. Williams, and tarried,
that Mayor Butler take the chair.
The Mayor in opening the meeting
oongratulated the shareholders ep,n the
success that had attended the submission
of the bylaw to the people. It augured
well fur the future suooess of the com-
pany. The permanent board of direc-
tors, he said, would require to be elected
at the present meeting, and it was ne-
cessary to have the hest avaible men on
the board. Early action would have to
be talon towards selecting a ahs for the
works, u no time was to be lost in be-
ginning operations.
Moved by Mr M. C. Cameron, second-
ed by Mr Horace Horton, that the tol-
lowiog gentlemen comprise the perma-
nent board : M1essn barrow, Holt, But-
ler, Smeeth, Humber, John Acheson.
and Joseph YV;I;iants. together with two
rspreeentatives from Clinton.
Moved by Mr Pr,udfo..t, seconded by
Mr Crabb, that the board of directors be

After some discussion the amendment
was put and voted down. The motion
was then carried, and the gentlemen
named constitute the beard of directors.

Mr Crabb, that the directors he instruct-
ed to wake all necessary enquries as to
sites and prices. and to report at i lhixt-
ing of stockholders to be called at the
earliest possible date. Carried.

Over the dinner table we discussed
the sermons, while the Canada set full
Mari for Goderich, which we reached at
10p.m. We drove with the inspector
through the streets, so stilt in the late
1 night bourn. Each street seemed a tree -
lined avenue, or else, in theater -light,
the foliage became more darkly promi-
nent.
Goderich is beautifully situated. It
stands over 100 feet above lake revel, on
$ high bluff or tableland, and from the

climbed before reaching the town. The
streets run like the points of the compass
from the court hoose square in the cen•
ire. The effect is decidedly unique and
pretty.
The lighthouse is only twenty feet in
height, but the high ground upon which
it is built brings it 140 feet above lake
level. We climbed the short tower and
stood in front of the lamps that were
sending their radiance lakeward, but it
was two warns to remain long. R e ex-

that measures the wind's velocity. It
