To the Editor of Tne Swats At_
DEAR SIN.—As I mentioned in my
last, we were forced to laud on the edge
of a swamp and could hot get at the
moat over three rods sway from the edge
of the lake and the storm, besides which
we had c+ssiderable ditbculty in collect•
ing firewood for the Mott, but we were
all quite ready to get to bed. About two
o'clock in the un oraiag, however, I wise
considerably seared on being shaken by
the shoulder and a hand placed over my
mouth, but this was done by my nearest
neighbor, Young, who whispered me not
to make • noise to disturb Ben, who was
now getting very much knocked up with
anxiety and fatigue. John had been
wakened up by the storm and went to
see how things were booking at the lake,
and hurried back for me to see what
he had Acer' or rather feel what he had
felt, for it was pgirk that we could sen
nothing, and the storm was apparently
worse than ever. After groping around
for a while we found shout a foot and a
half of our canoe sticking out of a bank
et ice and tilted up as high as our heads,
there being sx. or eight feet covering all
the rest of it. flow, as it was quite evi-
dent that our voyaging was at an end
and that there was nothing better to do
than go to bed again, we replenished
our fin as well as we possibly weld, Ben
being still sound a -deep, and none of us
awoke again until about eight o'clock.
and were rejoiced to find test the storm
was over ; but on going to the lake to
consider what was next to be dens we
were perfectly amazed to fend that not e
vesnike of ice, canoe or driftwood was to
be seen. The wind having shifted more to
the north stet raising the water some-
what higher, had driven every moveable
thing clean dean the lake and had left
nothing but • clean sand or gravel beach
as far as we could see. As soon se we
could make up our minds as to what arse
best to be done, Young and I started up
through the bush always keeping within
sight of the lake in search of some good
Samaritan to give us sotto help in our
trouhle, and left Ben alcove but assuredly
not ''in his glory," for that unfortunate
money still lay on his mind like an in -
