The Methodists of the world will on
May 1 begin their great conference In New
York city. and already delegates from the
uttermost parts of the earth have begets
t0 arrive to the Amens= metropolis.
Among them i. Dr Robert Nano eel Midday.
delegate from Japan. He has been 0s•
gaged in missionary work In Chins and
Japan for over forty-one y hes, and la one
of the prindpai mon wbo undertook the
Protestant trsoalatl.0 of the Bible hullo
the Chinese and Japsnee i tongues. Ones
June. 1873, his work het been moaned
exclusively to Japan. and he speaks with
enthusiasm of the progress of Methodism
in that distant country To a New York
oortr•).00dent of this paper he said:
"Thew Is little ditteulty encountered in
prosecuting the work of conversion to
Christianity among the Japanese. On
mutters of religion they are surprisingly

to give • satisfactory reply. An exami-
nation of to Shinto literature discloses
the tact that no moral axle Is enunciated
in their belief The five infidel which
embody the erred of Shintoism are:
"1 Adoration or preservation of pare
fin. as the emblem of purity and Instru-
ment of purification.
"2. Purity of soul. heart and body to be
preserved.

Worship, both in the temples and at
ioome.
-The Shinto temples ars very plain
structures, built of the finest kinds of
woods exquisitely finished, but destitute
of paint. gilding and. as far as possible,
of metal Within the temple no idol,
images or effigies are to be seen. The only
symbols of worship are the mirror. r.r

order among the contending deities who
at that time dwelt on earth. She is re
ported to have said to hint.

-The get-hel i• simply a slender wand of
nnpainted wood. from which hang two long
pieces of paper, notched so as to present •
twisted appearance. It is supposed to at-
tract the attention of spirits. Some of
tire prayers used in wdshlp consist sim-
ply In repeating the name of the idol;
others in repeating a few sentences sup-

posed to possess magical efficacy As an
obstacle to the advance of the Christian
religion in Japan. Shintoism is not for-
midable,
ormidable, notwithstanding its assured
place In the traditions and affections of
the people. The Methodists number
about 2,500 converts in Japan np to the
present time. Of thew some 2.000 are
members of the church, and the other 500
are pr.batloners. Our people have asked
me to petition for a resident bishop. and
I see no reason why their demands should
not be complied with. The conference of
Japan is entirely self supporting. It make
no assistance from this country teethe
support of churches and schools. A vest
work could be done there by • liberal ex-
penditure of honey. bit so far ea the
missions already established are most
earned. no aid Isecessary. I have
been since July. 188& president of the
Toki-Ei-Wa-Gakke. which is the mimeo(
the Methodist Episcopal college in Japan.
Daring the past year we have had about
250 students In attendance. Out of that
number 21 have become converts to
Christianity, and t large number take a
lively interest in the doctrines of the
Gestation faith. -Several years ago thee*
