—Wel', 1 see the citizens' railway
committee has amain organized, and 1
look for some work to be dune dunes
the next few months. Mebbe you don't
know that whoa the anginal citizens'
committee was formed, the litigation
was to work indepeodently of the town
council, and fur some time after its for-
eame the rule was rigidly adhered to.
In fact, un one occasion pressure was
brought to bear upon the then presi-
ded, the late Samuel Platt, to come
out ail a candidate for town honors, but
h. declined on the ground that the
citizen.' committee would be able to do
bettor work as • dietinet institution, and
nithout any dual membership. That
was away back three years ago, and at
that time the citizzascommittee was
sneered at by a large majority of the
members of the corporate body. Sims
then the councillors, almost to • man,
have charged their tuns, sod today I
usderstand that members of that body
are claiming re-election on the ground
that they were members of the original
railway committee. 1 may here state
what is an unalterable foot, that no mem-
ber of the town council as thou con-
stituted had a pier) on the original
citizens' committee, and it was a plank
in the platform of that t.ody that no
member should be a candidate for
council honors and remain on the board.
Al the present time,I understand a ns.
bit of the town council claim to be
members of the citizens' committee, aad
if the arrangements were as I have
stated, and as I know them to bare
been, I would like to know how they
sneaked on to the board. 1 knew of no
motion passed by the citizens' committee
relintteintf the stipulation originally made
that the dual pientions were jocose-
patible, and I don't think any of the
embed can point out that mach a
motion was made.

Sheppard is • live oewspaper man, and
made the Nemo a readable paper.
Ho haslately paid more attention to

and editorial departments of his paper,
itikbus sul bis. rgb. Mr
Slumped, however, 'is all.that tempera-
ment that must go at full pace or come
to a full atop. He has to be going at
high pressure or not at all. However,
there is this to be said in his favor, that
among newspaper men reneralty he was
the most popular manager in the city.
The A. -of will be conducted by A com-
pany, strictly as an evening paper in the
future. There is another move in coo-
ns:nun with its management which is
not fully apparent yet.
Hattlan's defeat by Reach has drawn
out many expressions of sympathy for
the late champion cf the world. Toronto
was very proud of Hanlan. Hie earlier
victories brought much money to the
city, and his decadence as an oarsman
has bees watched with regret by many
outside of the sporting world. It is
plain that if Replan has not retrograd-
ed as a *cullers that others have used his
own or superior methods to defeat him.
Hanlan's defeat by Teenier looked a
little suspicious ; this third defeat by
Beech, however, shows that the etas-
dian in not the best duller sitting in a
boat today.
It now looks as if the contest for the
mayoralty will be mainly on the question
of temperance. Mr ;arke is regarded ed in this section, and from this town thought, to pay for the dead that they
