—Phew: Wasn't it hot during the
last days of last •eek 1 It almost made
me regret that during the biting, cold
days of the past winter I had wished for
summer weather. I had the eoteolatioa
of knowing, hoverer, that A. M Polley,
Anthony Allan and Jonathan Miller had
to swelter just the same as I had, and 1
took another lemonade, and smiled and
grinned and bore it. But it was con
damned hot all the same, and don't you
forget it.
—Speaking shout dog days, haw does
it happen that at this tim• of the year
men usually feel more like "shuffling .•f
this mortal Boil," --to use a phrase from
the late William Shakespeare—than at
any other time of the year 1 I was some
time in doubt upon the matter, but 1
think that Fre struck the bedrock of the
besinees, at d it is this : At this time of
the year most men get fearfully and
wonderfully averse to labor, whether of
body •;r mind, and then, as the late Dr%
Watts, or some other gentlemen with a
leaning towards religious versifimtion,
wrote :
faun ends sorer mirbier stilt,
For idle hands to do.
These cogitations on the tendency to sui-

upon me by the manner in which • sen-

wined act" He borrowed knives from
diver persons and made as if to do fatal
work, hat failed to 'braise the hide in
the vicinity of his windpipe. Now, I
have • theory on this point, and it is
1 this : If soy man becomes so low to his
