!Kauy a time and ott has the town of
•.uderich been described. There are
few amongst our revular readers who aro
nut familiar with the topography of
Huron's county town, but even the few
• .fight not to remain w outer darkness
regarding the luoatruu ut the town that
l+as gained for itself the reputation of
teeing one of Canada's most favored sum
ries resorts. Perched upog a plateau
..car 100 feat above the level of Lake
Huron, and situated at that point where
the flowing Maitland mingled its waters
Wish those that cover the buww of "our
,esu bird lake" lies the town ort Gude-
rich. The streets are broad and clean,
and there is an air of tidiness and thrift
no matter in whet direction the eye may
be cast, The peculiar layout of the Sewn
has been fre.luently alluded to, and we
will ouly state that the "spider's web"
principle has been followed eut very
closely. From the courtbuu.e, which
Is in the heart of the town, radiate eight
streets drum an octagon, and these in
their turn are tort by acute and obtuse
angles, as the case may be. The project•
.,r of (iodench, the late Sheriff Macdon-
ald, evidently intended that the place
should eventually becomes city, and lad
oat the wide streets with a view to future
growth. Although the town has only•
population of about 4,000, It is uner-
stood there are some forty-seven milesof
street. under the supervision of street-
irapectar Gordon, and the manner in
which repairs are kept up shows that
he and his aeeiatants have an eye tu
business all the year round. The high-
ways of the town are . 1 of bite
gravel, and so porous is its nature and
so perfect the dr•tnage system that such
a thing as mud is en unknown quantity
in Goderich, Tlae sidewalks are laid
from the same material, which when
hardened, assumes almost the consist-
ency of concrete, and is fully as endui-
lug. The cost of keeping the sidewalks
in repair is reduced to a minimum, but
the tax for repairs of ahoelesther rules
lily high. Elsewhere in this
Erbil, Ma refer to e
nitbe town, bet a word or two dealing
with the trade outlook in a general sense
may not be out of place. )-ears ago
when reciprocity with the United Statss
obtained, there was no busier Canadian
port on the chain of lakes than Goderich,
1n to its population ; but the
abrogation of the reciprocal trade rela.
tions between Canada art the neighbor -
Republic, and the falling
off in the lake trade proved a heavy blow
to the progress of the town. With the
of business from the Lake side
came • strong effort from the G. T. R.
to divert trade that had 'formerly
bees done in Goderich to Sarnia, so that
the freighta of Goderich would be kept
within a certain figure, and that there-
fore, no would accrue to
the original shareholders of the B. & L.
11, R. The G. T. R. authorities may
have been justified in working their
road and t to suit their own
intersex, but the result was disastrous
to the town. Trade which should have
reasoned here was diverted to utker
points, and the . I progress of
Ooderich has nut been marked from
that day to this. Latterly a feeling has
arisen that an effort should be made to
.ince more bring the town up to its old
standard of push and energy, and we are
of opinion that, if proper action be
taken, the hopes of the most sanguine
may be realised, There are two things
that can about the . 1 im-
proement alluded to ---R
the iabtringing o 1 :MIE . oe-
R, The first is to a certain degree out-
side of the oontrol of the inhabitants of
Goderich, bat the second is within the
possibilities, if the people and their re•
preseutative men be up and doing.
