AP1tII. aO, 18$6 produced rapidly se M to hat en the spread of the fungus at der favorable conditions. This minute' microaeJpio plant is certainly a , low form of vegetable life, lova- pable of manufacturing food from the mineral kingdom. but fasten ing upou other plants and feeding upon their jalca. A wet steam supplies coudlttons well adapted for its development, and hence we have the '•rut" associated with such weather. There is ata doubt that many spores are always Enure or less present, but they are pre- vented from being a source of trouble because the weather is n:,t gaited for their growth. Remedies. -The "n t" usually appears about the first t fro weeks is August, and if the weather is favorabte its spread is vera rapid, for as soon as the thread-like structure which arises from the spore is developed it immediately becomes spore -bearing. Ht•tree the importance of eiawining the plants for the apoesraaco of the brownish spots that indicate the presence of the fungus. 1. As soon es discovered, dib; the potatoes. Delay will allow it to spread to the stems, and tbence to the tubers. 11 it reaches there and damp weather comes, "rot" will certainly appear. 2. After digging, the potatoes should be put in a soot dry, place, thus surrounding them with con- ditions unfavorable for the growth of the fungus, if any happens to be upou them. 8. Growing early varieties is *lorthy o( consideration, so that they may mature before the sea- son arrives when this parasite is likely to affect the crop. 4. Alf potato stalks in affected loads •bt,uld be gathered and. burned, so as to destroy the mil- lions of spores which may be upon them. 5. Use none but good aced. If at all affected, meet them ; and - plant in well -drained land. If the potatoes to be used for seed have been taken from cellars where affected ones were kept, they are likely to have the microscopic spores on them mad escape notice. It would be beet to get seed from unaffected districts. 6. 11 is scarcely necessary to remark that it would be in- judicious to plait potatoes in the sane field the following year after a visitation of the "rot,' inasmuch as the ground may retain the germs of the disease. 7. Avoid planting upon heavy clay soil, but prefer a light and dry soil. This presents the few- est conditions suitable for the growth of the fungus. The nature of our climate is not so favorable for the develop- ment of this itrjerioas fungus as that of Britain ; yet as we are sometimes yisited by it, and although scarcely viewed as a scourge, it is well that we should remember its nature and habits and always be ready to guard against failure if it appears. As last summer was favorable for its propagation, great care should be exereieed in the selec- tion of seed this spring.
