moving the treasure from Barter.
Loewe, Oct. 1—After attaching a
proshmation to the trees, Gordon started
for Berber. The day after his arrival he
placed two steamers in the middle of the
neer and opened a bombardment upon
the t..wn. The bombardment lasted
until late in the 'harpoon. asrlon
afterwards proceeded in the direction of
Dlalineen. It is rumored that Moham-
med Elh-Ther, El Mandi'e *meet. at
Berber, was killed. Other reports state
that be eeoaped and removed the treasure
to Kerbi. Subsequently Gordon thor-

population of Berber tied. The fall of
Berber will enable Col. Kitchemer to
reach Gordon from Morita and ascertain
his wishes regarding the Nil. expedition.
A reliable messenger reports that he saw
Gordon with four steamers towing several
boats. Gordon arrived at Shendy and

rocks and they were unable to goat her.
A bargain was made with Arabs to pro-

Arabs proved treacherous, and massacred
the first party which landed from the
steamer. Then they boarded the vessel

exception of four men, whose names are
unknown. It is feared that Colonel
Stewart is amcng the killed. It is un-
known whether Mr. Power, oorres n -
dent of the Tiers had returned to Khar-
toum or eat with Stewart. Major Kit-
chener telegraphs that the whole of CoL
Stewart's party bas been murdered.

church courts by presenting his resig

which the culprit presided, are, it ap-
pears of a somewhat festive bent. To
extinguish the debt in the church a fair
was held in the edifice, at which the .1e
of lager was the chief source of revenue.
The pastor was injudicious enough to
hint that he did not ars about holding
the joint Ake" of religious instructor
and chief saloon keeper. The congre-
gation could not retain the services of a
minister who so vigorous) trampled on
their doctrinal corns. The heretic was
asked to resign. This occurrence shows
that there are limits to perisbiooneni en-
durance which cannot be overstepped
with impunity even by ministers
