It looks as if the Scott Act dues tend
to decrease crime. The Berlin W. C. T.
U. recently enquired why in Halton
county there were 245 arrests in 1880;
131 in 1881; 147 in 1882 and only 97 in
1883 1 To this 31r. W. Van Allan, the
county eaoler, says :—
"Ia my opinion the main rearm tithe
decrease of arrreets in this county is on
acenunt of the suppression of the liquor
traffic. There has been very little crime
in the county during the two last years.
The number of arrests during the pre-
sent year up to date are 138, but nearly
all of these .are what is called tramps,
who have beim in jail over night, the
acme as are put In the lock-up in other
towns where there is one, there being
none in this town. There have been no
criminal arrests belonging to the county
this year, an.l we have had an empty goal
for tive weeks excepting a woman in in-
