Our readers will learn with surprise
and regret of the death of Hugh Love,
sr., of (ail. Green, in the township of
Stanley, The sad event took place at
the resideuee of has nephew, Dr. James
Kerr Love, neer Glasgow, Scotland, on
the 19th .of February. The .ad news
only reached his friends here en Weil
n eeds), last As is known, Mr. Love
Inas been in poor health for several
months, gaud, accompanied by Mrs. Love
crossed the Atlantic about six weeks ago
with the hope that the change would
effect an improvemeut. He stood the
Journey remarkably well, and on arriving
in Scotland seemed w much better that
lir. friends sent hums the must encourse-
int reports. Soon after arriving in
Glasgow. however, he had an ezanune-
lion male by one of the most eminent
physicians of the city, who pronounced
the disease cancer in the stomach, and
that recov.ry was hopeless. This diag-
nosis was afterwards confirmed by other.
Upon being informed .1 his condition
Mr. Lore seemed to low hops entirely,
and from that out sank so rapidly that
he passed sway within sin day. there-
after. Hs was in his fifty-feurth year.
He was "attended throughout by Mn
Love, who was by his aids until the last,
and who will remain an Scotland until
the tint of May. The melancholy intel-
ligence was conveyed to the friends here
by Robert Jamieson, who left Scotland
the day after his death. There are few
men who will be more deeply or .incere-
ly regretted than Mr. Love. He was
one of the pioneer settlers of this country,
and did as much as any tither one man
to advance its interests, and he will be
inuch missed, not only in his own im-
mediate neighborhood, but In the county.
He was a man of much more than ordin-
ary intelligence and ability, and being •
good writer and an easy, fluent, public
speaker, he took a prominent and Iced•
ing part in all public matter& A. au
agriculturist, he stood in the front rank,
and ever took a deep interest in every-
thing calculated to advance the interests
of his brother farmers He was one et
the first in this county to import
thoroughbred stook from the old country,
and at dfferent times made several valua-
ble importations, both of horses and
sheep, which proved of inestimable
benefit to the public sod resulted in
profit to himself. Had his life been
spared to retnrn to Canada, it was his
intention to bring out with him several
heavy draught horse., but an all wise
Prvrid once has decreed it otherwise.
He was an enterprising and public spirit-
ed citizen, a warm hearted, true friend,
and a conscientious, honorable man.
The writer of this has enjoyed the pleas-
ure and honor of his acquaintance since
boyhood, and we can feelingly testify :o
his warm and sincere friendship. He
leaves a family of four sons and three
daughters, all well provided for. His
loss to them will he inestimable as he
was a kind and indulgent father and a
wise and prudent counsellor, while t..
Mrs. Love none can truly tell the great
affliction his death will be to her. Her
home coming will to a sad uee indeed.-
