pure fiction, and the article in the Mail
equally so. What 1 told the Adrettieer
reporter respecting the true meaning of
my judgment in the Weekes case, is, in
every respect, correctly reported in sail
paper, and to put the matter beyond
question, 1 will now repent that, liy tho
language which has been so much misre-
presented, 1 intended to express how
much I despised the condect of Mr. W.

young man as to eget hitu t.. ,make a
false declaration. 1 have nothing more
to say on the subject, and bops this let-

A young lady recently addressed a
letter to Mr. Raskin on the subject of
art training. Desirous of becoming an
artist, and wishing gad advice, she
thought she could do no better than ap-
ply to au high an authority. The raw y
was characteristic and rather disappohit-
ing. The great critic. without giving
her any hint as W the rigbt course to
pursue, told her 'It would be better to
write less and cultivate a good and beau-
tiful handwriting. No one who writes
as you do could stake a good artist_' It
took five people to decipher the hiero-
glyphics it which Ruskin clothed these
few words. The young lady framed this
cunous production and hung it in her
studio.
Unless yon have hired help whom you
can trust implicitly it is good idea to
use earthen dishes for milk in place of
tin ; they are kept clean with much Less
trouble. The scientists of the present
day and hour claim that the germs of
disease hide in the crevice's of a milk -
pan, and that nothing but conscientious
application of absolutely boiling water
will remove the danger.
A light and pu icing for the top on-
ly of a cake is road. by heating the white
of one egg to a stiff froth ; beat in gra-

nice for the top of almost any kind ..f a
baked pudding, whether it is to be serv-
ed in the dish in which it is baked or in
saucers.
Nice bread -cake is made of two. cups of
light bread dough, one and a half cups of

spoonfuls of sour milk, half a teaspoon-
ful of soda, half a grated nutmeg, •
teaspooufd l of cinnamun, a cup of rai-
sins chopped and with flour dusted over
them. Stir all in but the raisins and
put them in the last thing. It should
rise for half an hour and then be baked
in a moderate oven.
If troubled with the smoke from soft
coal so that you cannot lay your clothes
on the grass to bleach, you can improve
their looks in this way :-After rubbing
them pour absolutely boiling water ovsr

night. Neil morning s_ald 51111 rinse as
usual. This d.t..s a great deal toward
clearing out the yellowish color that they
would otherwise certainly hare.
'Ella T. wishes to know hcw to make
little cakes of hickory nuts and sugar
that are wmetimes sometimes called
bilkery nut macaroons. This is a simple
way to prepare them :-Maker a regular
treating of white of eggs and sugar, a 1.1

them into small balls, lav on huttered
