THH FALSII PROPHHT. Met Me sew MUtammed-A Ilheaeb.r Els unsod a.wer. El Idandi, the "False Prophet of the Soudan,'' who as cresting such a distur- bance in Southern Egypt, is a former Arab chief, now 4l years old. He was born at Dungula, made memorable as the place where Ismail Pasha Saddyk, late finance minister of the ex -khedive, was put tutu a sack of stones and sunk to the river Ntle. His father was Mo. hammed, a carpenter by trade. The young man followed his father's business for some years, but finally had the tuffs - fortune to cut off the ends of the fingers on his left hand. At this he gave up working with tools, and took to reading the koran in public plica: anti herangtt- ing the crowd. So great was his ele- quence that it is said 1. o,.:•. came Olt foot huudreds of miles to see and hear ha,n H.,travelled from place to place through the country to the south-east of Khar- toum, and filially Rave oat that he was a prophet. He called special attention to an ancient prophecy which declared that on a certain date El Mandi or the Messiah should appear. He was to be exactly 40 years old, ono artn would be longer than the other, his father's name would be Mohammed, and he himself would be hidden for a time. This pro- phecy he claimed as referring to himself. He stationed himself on the Island of Abbs, in the White Nile, whether thep superstitious people flocked to weloumft hitn as the successor of Mohammed. The matter became so serious that as early as August 1881, a re'•ellion against the constituted authorities broke out in the Islaud of Abba, and efforts were made to arrest the rebellious leader. But they all ended in failure so complete that. the Egyptians lost 1.200 men and rifles within a few months, while the followers of the False Prophet were on the constant increase. In June, 1882, Yousef Pasha was sent against him at Goebel Gaffes with 4,400 men and 4 {funs. Yousef was complete- ly routed with a loss of 3,600 men and all his guns. Of the 800 who escaped the greater part were subsequently cap- tured by the rebels and sold Intoalsvery. Such success onlyconfirmed the people, and possibly, El Mandi himself, in the divinity of his claim's. His followers increased by the thousand, and it became inure apparent that he aimed not only at the possession of the Bounden, but also to supplant the khedive himself. Duriug the recent Anglo-EJptian war neither the khedive nor the Porte were in a condition to oppose his plass. The result was that while the khedive was growing weaker anti being reduced to the merest vassalage, El Mhedi was gathering strength with the rapidity of a whirlwind. The recent signal victory of the Pro- phet over Hicks Pasha gives him com- plete command of the wole upper Nile couittry, with the exception of Khar- toum, which is strongly garrisoned, and which may hold out until succour reaches it from Suaklm, on the Red Sea, which England, it is expected, will make the base of operations for an expedition from Indhi. If the khedive were alone, n•th- ing could prevent this new wave of Moslem fanaticism from sweeping down the Nile valley, overrunning the whole Delta, and establishing itself in power at Cairo and Alexandria. Al it is, England will have no holiday parade on her hands like Wulseley's campaign of hast year. The journey from SKakim on the R.e3 Sea to the Nile is a lung nue, and the country to be traversed is a sandy • sort without shade of water. Entirely nopposed it would ha • sore teak to car- ry ar ry at, errny across it ; but with hordes tot of the prophet's fanatical cavalry bang- ing ou its skirts, it becomes a desperate undertaking. Much oaf what passes for juvenile depravity may be easily accounted for. Mischief is not meanness ; it is misdi- rected energy. Intentional wrong -doing is generally the farthest from the boy's thought. The force of temptation and impulae overcomes his own choice and power of resistance, while the impndent, illtemper or reckless haste of the teacher sometimes prompts him to make example of such an unlooked-for infraction, lest advantage be taken of is to overthrow good order. This is .n enormous blund- er, and cannot be easily excused. The evils of the human heart cannot be cured by harshness \ha hats Enrbolneeds sdis fair play. f people er growth need is more of kindness and forbearance. If a boy has lost his rank among the pure and good, win him back again. He cannot be forced to cnange his desires.
