RLTURNED WITH THANK& -A literary,1
mau in Vienna, possessor of the learned
degree of doctor used to take mid-day
redaction at • well a well known cafe in
the Austrian capital. One wet day the
place was lees fully attended than usual,
and the miserable state of the weather
tadeeed moat of the visitant to seek their
various employments u.pnedfly aa pos-
sible. When prueeeding to ft blow the
example, the learned doctor was aston-
ished to find, in place of his shabby and
weather-beaten head -covering a real
Paris hat, shining with sparkling bril-
liancy. He oould only attribute this
quasi -magical change to the delicate at-
tention of some friend, and hastened to
display the acquisition, with no little
pride, to his family. The next day a
young man sweated him at the cafe, and
politely remarked, "Doctor, allow me to
claim my hat and to apologize for the
apparent mistake. The fact was, how-
ever, I had no umbrella, and you had
opt. I did not know what to do to pre-

Ladies winter outside garments are
loog, fitting Meters, or of dolman
shape, with loose sleeves. Those of
beaver cloth are of new shades of brown
and gray, or black. Many very useful
short swim as well u long ones are made
from a new fabric called "Jersey Cloth."
Some of these, for house wear, are hand-
somely braided, and cost from five to six
dollars Waterier* from twelve to
twenty-five dollars. Many have a deep
plash bowies. . Velveteen issuer of fin,.
q.atitt. choir* shades, and is very popu•
lar. 1t costs • dollar and a hall a yard
and can be found in all oolare.
For a yoanw :say a very handsome
atilt ,would be dark tuaroon velve-
teen, with a 'mall collar and cuffs of
some light gray fur, sad a Mall bonnet
of shirred maroon velvet, having a bunch
of flowers at the left side, of light orange
color shaded to deep red, and double
*trines of narrow satia or velvet ribbon
tied in long loops. Fur an older lady, a
suit of black velveteen, with a black vel-
vet bonnet trimmed with plaited gray
lace sR around the edge, and a hunch of
three small gray feathers, is vary quiet
and lady like. For richer cloaks and
suits, there are heavy brocade velvets
and cloths, and the ever substantial seal-
skin sacks. Fur is always worn atrtrim-
ming, but braid, broad and narrow, in
broad or narrow, in rows or as embroid-
ery. is inexpensive anti stylish this wint-
er, both for cloaks and dresses.
Little eirli suits are usually of two
kinds of goods-- either plain an plaid
so.lbined, er two contrasting colors in
plain goods The skirt is made with box
plaits, a broad sash of the same material,
and a plain princess° bodice, of different
Dolor or material, or a blouse waiat,
which is much worn by ladies as well as
outside, trimmed with rourtes and
strings of narrow ribbon, will be worn
this winter by little gtrls. Worsted caps
of various styles, instead of hods, are
used for whotd. They are made at
home, and have two or three large pom-
pons of different shades, of same color as
the hood. These pnmp,ns are made on
cards like the round ball tassels, which
almost every one knows how to prepare.
Little boys wear plaid suits of the dull
colon, which are brought out this fall,
instead of the old gay ones. They have
three plaits before and behind, are belt-
ed at the waist, and have velvet collar
and cuffs. A plain ulster and nap to
match, with a broad collar of linen or
embroidery, complete the street wit.
If nice embroideries tweet be afforded,
plain linen with • simple edge should be
warn. Do not make thele of cheap lace.
A profnsinn of this, like very cheap
jewelry, is vulgar. -{Ethel Stone, in
American Agriculturist for December.

He lived and died in Philpot Lane, but
he had a count.y retreat in the then
rural et littide of Bethnal Oreen. Uue

Congregation, which at that time was a
kind of Jewish aristocracy, he quarried a
German Jewess, Judith, the daughter of
Levy Bsrreat Cohen, a wealthy lner-
ehNnt in the City. It was in memory
Of her than Sir Moses built the Jewish
College at Ramsgate. The sister of Lady
Munteflere married Mr. N. M. Roth-

of that name. It may interest those
who are anxious to learn how to prolong
life that Sir !lows sustained nature al-
most entirely upon milk, sometime
varied by a little soap bend bread and
butter ; but he has the old English love
of generous ports. of which he takes two
or three glasses daily.
A MIllealty Overcome.
It is often very difficult to set children
to take medicine, and especially Worm
remedies, which they often require. Dr.
Low's Pleasant Worm Syrup is not only
agreeable to take, but a safe and certain,
cure for all varieties of worms, including
tape worms, that produoe serious distur-
bance with children or adults 2

It is strange how closely people read
the papers. We never sat anything
that anybody doesn't like but what we
soon hear of it and everybody tells us
about it. But if once and a while we
happen to say • good thing we never
hear that anybody seems to notice it.
We may pay sone man c dozen compli-
ments, and give hint a few puffs, and he
likes it as a tribute to his greatness and
never thinks it does him any good, but if
we happen to say something that this
very man does not like, or something
that he imagines reflects on him, or his
character, see how quickly he dies up
and gets mad about it. All our evil is
dulycharged to ns, but we never appar-
enty, et any credit for what good we
