The Car Driver Darning.
For several evenings lately one simp-
le incident has given me such pleasure
that now I regularly lounge in .Dine con-
venient corneref my gallery that I may
not miss it. There coulee to the corner
of the street a young woman carrying in
her arms a little babe scarce old enough
to say its one first word. There they
wait, this mother and her chid; wait till
ore certain car is sighted on its way up
the street. The mother must then in-
voluntarily press her little one closer to
her, for baby brightens up as though it
knew papa is near. Presently the car is
at a stand -still; the driver reaches over
the dashboard, takes the little one from
the woman's outstretched arms, kisses
once or twice the roguish month and
then hands babe back again. Some-
time the car is filled with passengers -
it is never empty -end though some of
the occupants may at first wonder at the
stop, the reason is sown found out, and a
kindly feeling excuses the momentary
delay. Away rattles the car; out of the
darkening street into the distance be-
yond hides the woman with the child,
but the'pretty picture hangs about the
place for many a moment .after. It's a
trifling, simple tiling; but I hasten every
evening to my accustomed nook.—[Ex-

A rtriir, pretty tidy is made by sewing

handsome tidy •t small expense is to get
an oblong or square of satin, cover half
of it diagonally with lace insertion sewed
together, trim wit:' s pretty edge, and
on the ccrner of the ..tin which is net
covered by lace work a spray of

Boston To'reri,.r :-A man can always
learn something if he will only look
about him. I was at the Postottioe De-
partment the other day, and I noticed
an employee busy fixing stampa to en-
velopes. Every time he moistened the
right-hand corner of the envelope and
then placed the stamp upon it. 1 asked
him if there was any advantage in wet-
ting the envelope instead of the stamp,
and he said :-"You notice that I moist-
en the envelope first ; well, I do that
because It is the right -way There is a
right and a wrong way to everything, and
eon.equently there is a right and wrong
cast to pat on postage stamps. It is im-
possible to moisten a stamp with the
tongue unless a small proportion of the
gum adheres to it. Now, this aft:^ is by
no means injurious, but then the depart-
ment does not advertise it as a health
food 1 so the only way left is the right
way, and that is to moisten the envelope
first." After listening to this brief
statement I felt as though 1 had emerged
from the deep shade of ignorance to the
glorious sunlight of knowledge.
