If in my pleasant nae she could but be
Unto my toys all that she wry to me;
If she could come again from ton far shore

If she : sold know how tenderly I prize
Only the memory of her dear yrs
Hew all her words seen, holy ...a prayer'
And how with tears and sad, repentant care
Ive tried Lobe like her, both brave and true—
Ah, if .he knew ! Ah, if she only knew!

When Augustine, he who was after-
ward Bishop of Hippo, and who is known
alike among Protestants and Catholics as
St. Augustine, was in the Baptistry of
Milan, in the year 336, and Ambrose,
Bishop of Milan, was pouring over him
the purifying water in the name of the
Fattier, the San and the Holy Ghost,
Ambrose, in his great joy over the con-
version of 'such** notable sinner as was
Augustine, broke forth into the jubilant
cry :- '• W c praise Thee. ()God r'

And so the brand hymn to the Trinity
which we naw call "Te Detain" was anti-
phonally extemporised by these two.
Such is the beautiful tradition of the
origin of the "To Deum;" but, alas ! it
is based upon a very slight foundation.
The authorities wbich get forth this view
of the authorship have been impeached,
and tete stronger opinion is that the "Te
Deunt" antedates Ambrose and Augus-

This morning hymn is made up of Marts

quotations strikingly familiar to the

that it represents the ancient Greek
morning hymn in the Alexandrine m in-
uscript, and that its its 'present form it is
a composition of tho• Fourth or Fifth
Century; while Dr. Hersh; in his
"Church Dictionary," gives it a Galilean
origin. It has. been .ariously assigned
to Alwndiw,-.icetriva, the 1 iahup of

Arles. But whether its cotoposition be
