BENOOUuH'S LEcruka-The leet:ire by J W Bengough, Grip's cartoonist, which was delivered on Friday night under the auspices of the West Huron teacher's association, was largely attended. The lecture was an admxitureof the ab.urt- !y hifalutin' and excruciatingly foamy, and reminded us of the peculiar style of the late "Artemus W'ard." The lecture was illustrated at various stages, and Ed- ward Blake, Sir John, ML C. Cameron, Geo. Baird. J. R. Miller, Major Cline, and other specimens of the good, the true and the lovely, at times smiled be• nignly upon the spectat es. J. W. Should the clever cartoonist come this way again, there are many why will again run the risk of laughing.tllem- selves to death. M. E. Cutm oo-Rev. 0. G. Shrew CNm'y Wel neper,. The following is a synopsis of the jail report for year ending Sept. 30th 1883 : Number of prisoners cominitted for the year, 58 ; of these 46 were males and 12 females. 20 were committed as vagrants as follows : -11 mules and 9 females ; 8 for larceny, 7 for contempt of court, 5 trunk and disorderly, 5 fur insanity, 1 for horde stealing, 1 for asseult with in- tent, 1 for forgery, 1 for perjury, 1 for illegal voting. The remaining 8 were for minor offences. Of the whole uuOt- ber, 15 were married and 43 unmarried. The greatest number confined at any time during the year was 15, lowest number '2, daily cost per prisoner for rations, 9 cents. The daily average of prisoners during the year was 6 and a fraction. Whilst the total number of prisoners committed during tho year is the lowest that has been for the past 12 years, the daily average for the months of May June, July,August and Septem- ber is tho largest that has been for the past 16 years, it being a fraction over 7. The average number of days to each pri- soner was 41 and a fraction. The total number committed last year was 87, viz, 72 males and 15 females, showing a fall- ing off in the number of committed from the present year of 26, whish speaks well for the morality of our county. These addresses were accompanied by a purse of $180, contributed by members of all denominations. The addresses presented and speeches made at the socinl all expressed the hope that Mr. Sieveright would again he sent to 11 s North-west and' continue his usefulneas there.
