BENOOUuH'S LEcruka-The leet:ire by
J W Bengough, Grip's cartoonist, which
was delivered on Friday night under the
auspices of the West Huron teacher's
association, was largely attended. The
lecture was an admxitureof the ab.urt-

and reminded us of the peculiar style of
the late "Artemus W'ard." The lecture
was illustrated at various stages, and Ed-
ward Blake, Sir John, ML C. Cameron,
Geo. Baird. J. R. Miller, Major Cline,
and other specimens of the good, the
true and the lovely, at times smiled be•
nignly upon the spectat es. J. W.
B. held the attention of the audience for
over two hours, and not one of then; was
sufficiently audacious to say, "Give us
a rest." Should the clever cartoonist
come this way again, there are many why
will again run the risk of laughing.tllem-
selves to death.

morning was a particularly forcible one,
full of homely counsel. and well ctairn-

The following is a synopsis of the jail
report for year ending Sept. 30th 1883 :
Number of prisoners cominitted for the
year, 58 ; of these 46 were males and 12
females. 20 were committed as vagrants
as follows : -11 mules and 9 females ;
8 for larceny, 7 for contempt of court, 5
trunk and disorderly, 5 fur insanity, 1
for horde stealing, 1 for asseult with in-
tent, 1 for forgery, 1 for perjury, 1 for
illegal voting. The remaining 8 were
for minor offences. Of the whole uuOt-
ber, 15 were married and 43 unmarried.
The greatest number confined at any
time during the year was 15, lowest
number '2, daily cost per prisoner for
rations, 9 cents. The daily average of
prisoners during the year was 6 and a
fraction. Whilst the total number of
prisoners committed during tho year is
the lowest that has been for the past 12
years, the daily average for the months
of May June, July,August and Septem-
ber is tho largest that has been for the
past 16 years, it being a fraction over 7.
The average number of days to each pri-
soner was 41 and a fraction. The total
number committed last year was 87, viz,
72 males and 15 females, showing a fall-
ing off in the number of committed from
the present year of 26, whish speaks well
for the morality of our county.
Rev. J. SlsvtttroHT.-From a copy
of the Prince Albeit Times, which has
reached us, we learn that Rev. James
Sieveright, formerly of Goderich, has re-
signed his charge in that distant field.
At a farewell social Mr. Sieveright was
made the recipient of several eulogistic
addresses, the citizens of the town as
well as the members of St. Paul's Pres-
byterian church, joining in expressing
their:regard for the retiring missionary.
These addresses were accompanied by a
purse of $180, contributed by members
of all denominations. The addresses
presented and speeches made at the
socinl all expressed the hope that Mr.
Sieveright would again he sent to 11 s
North-west and' continue his usefulneas
there.

save to ask for a gloss of milk, which
upon receiving. he guile! down with the

Tee steamer •Mane 4.1Nrr.
On Friday, (ktober 12, the steamer
Ontario, of Beattie's line, which left
Sarnia Thursday night, with about 300
tons of freight, 100 deck and forty or
fifty cabin passengers, for Duluth and
intermediate paints, went hard aground
about 3 p.m., during a twisty f..g, about
half a mile from ehore, eight miles south-
west of Port Elgin. After ineffectual
efforts to extricate her from her rocky
bed, and fearing the effects of the ap-
proaching storm, Capt. James Mc.lfs ugh
about midnight decided to land thei
ladies and children, which was success-
fully carried onto although a he4vy sea
was running at the time. in the morning
the balance of the passengers were also
safely put ashore and are encamped in a
wood on the beach. Great praise is due
the captain, officers and craw for their
admirable conduct under trying merlin

by llr.ltman to seek another boarding

which the murderous asaatilt was
committed, Bruhuan gave White to un-

He intnredistely started after him to de-

ward him on the upper lauding, said :
"rot- HAP eKTCER NOT BOTHER SIE,"
to which the reply was made, "I don't
want to bother you, but I doe'\ want
you in the house. I have given you due
notice, and you must pack your trunk
and get out." White, however, insisted
upon going to the bedroom which he had
en in the habit of oocupying, and Btoh-

shoulder to eject him. White then
struck savagely at Brolimen, sui iutlict-

men grappled. In the struggle that en•

Upon examination rt was found that
blood was freely flowing from the

Balka'ill sent a special messenger for
Dr. McLean, and, leaving a oodple of
men to guard against the escape of
White from the bedroom, proceeded to
the Square, to secure theservices of con-

to White's bedroom, and found it

After repeatedly asking to be admitted,
and receiving no response. he proceeded
to burst in the door, and was surprised
to find White lying in bed, apparently
in a calm slumber. Advancing to the
side of the bed the constable said," ,
