The change from a week in a railway train, surrounded by the constant stir, and activity of the travelling public, to a quiet comfortable room, will be'. grate- ful one to the fatigued traveller. A day's rest, and we are refreshed aid able to look about us, and opnfrout the Paci- fic city. The pupuletiou is nearly 300,- 010. The city covers en are of about forty square miles, and dot growth from the gold exeiteutent n 40 -about thirty-fuur years ohl. It is re rly laid uut, has good side ell lighted. The city is t" nil ShUow, in fact like ancient eine, is said to be butlt un seven hills. THE CLIMATE I4i'*CULIAR IAtilliP varying only a few degrees thruumsgl the year. The moan temperature'- snu- ary is 5J in July 57', and a light over- coat is almost indispensable at any sue - sou ; the trade -winds and fogs which the Coast Range shuts tint, caning down with fury, rush iu at the Gulden Gate, cresting more .'enialid for heavier cloth- ing than the warmer unteriur. The city beasts sono of the finest hotels iu the world among thea) "The Palace," "The Grand," and "The Baldwin," all un a truly magnificent scale. TOR CARLE sTEEET RA1LwAY is a feature worthy ..f mention. The sable is a ware rope shout an inch in diameter. running in a ba beneath the street and between the nils; this is kept ca•tinually going 1iy a state cry en;;ine. An iron arm passes from the car and is made to grasp the cable securely, causing the car to move along very mysterious- ly; or it is release.( at the will rat the operator, when the car is immediately as pped by the brake. ity the cable system the 'Rise., hills are zliulh•,d with more ease and greater speed than for- merly by tho hone cars. 'rile dwellings are built principally of wood, to pre- vent injury by the frequent visitation of earthquakes, There are many IMPOSINO CHURCH ZDIPLOr4, among them St. Ignatius, belonging ,tis the Jesuits, said to hoe cost nearly one million dollars. Speaking of churches, our impressions were that if any place under the sun needed them it was 'Fris- co. It seemed somewhat different toour quiet Canadian manner of spending the Sunday, to see most of the business paces. open and their wars displayed for sale, and saute the of business streets thronged in regular market day style. Sunday is as little observed by two thirds the inhabitants of 'Frisco as any other day. A stroll on Saturday evening along Montgomery street will give a person au idta-of the MANY PHASE$ OP -LIFE, the many strange characters, and the variety of sights to be met with in a large city. The street i• well lighted by electricity, snaking the surroundings as distinctly visible as et mid-day. The mammoth establishments on each side seem to vie with ono another for who can make the Most brilliant display. Every few dam w'e oars we are greeted with the strains of some lively jig times, by as lively feet; or probably the refrain of some drunken sung issues from these 'cancers on the community.' It is esti- matel that if the = .' ,ons and Inc drink- ing br thele of 'Frisco were all' nn one street they would form a continuous line of live miles, or beth sides of a street t wo and a half miles long. The appearance of some of Tem "HOODLUMS" substantiates this statement. Ali nation- alities can be seen as we leisurely snake our way through the crowded thorough- fare, but the most numerous, and the one that attracts our attention most is the "heathen Chinee." But more of hint again. We are about opposite the ( "DIAMOND PALACE," so we will. look inside. We have read et Midas, supposed to be a Phrygian king, who was given power by Bacchus, to turn everything he touched into gold ; but here gold is but a secondary consid- eration, and Midas -like, some one seems to hare had the lease of the 'diamond - touch' for a while. On the walls are frescoed the graceful figures of a number of eastern beauties ; the head of each is apparently crowned hy a circle of dia- monds ; Lprillianta sparkle u1. the wrists ; diarn nils, half the size of filberts, hang from the ears : and on the neck a string and cluster is seen that would favorably onmparn with Monsieur Borhmer'e cele- brated Parisian necklace. in the midst of all this wealth we were lost in reverie, and if our companion had not plucked us by rhe coat collar and led us away, we might have somnambulantly walked through one of the magnificent mirrors which would cost us the amount of our salary for ,the next ten years. Those who like to study mankind can gaze on the grouper standing around in some of the quiet gardens. Those who are thea- ter -goers have a varied choice from a kw "variety" to those unsurpassed on the continent in beauty of inferior de- corations. A day spent in °OLDEN OATIr PARE and Woodward's Gardens, will amply repay the sightseer. The park does n.,t compare with Lincoln Park of Chicago, lir Central Park of New York, but it is new, having been bat lately reclaimed from a desert. and by irrigation and the planting of the yellow -lupin it convertel into a beautiful holiday resort. At the gardens can he seen a tine collection of everything curious both in vegetable and animal life. On Saturday and Sunday, theatrical entertainments attract thou. ssnda ; and especially on Saturday after - neons the Jewish holiday --"the beauty and the chivalry" of 'Frisco turn nut en warsa richlydressed and bejewelled, suggesting te idea that Worth the noted man.milliner of Paris, is wor*hipped here by the ladies as well es in nur eastern cities and towns. They are peaceable citi zeas, their worst faults being gambling opium smoking, and a happy faculty of causing napkins, tablecloths, spans or any light valuables to mysteriously dis- appear up their flowing sleeves. They seldom laugh, their features at all times wearing the same sedate expression. The meat interesting places to visit in the Chinese quarters aro the THEATRE AND J088 HOUSES, anu the cpiuum smoking dens. The theatre can be visited by paying double the price charged their own countrymen, but there are no " et>.ra,•' and the music is deafening j the beating of cymbals, triangles, gongs, the scraping of the Chinese hddlea and the tooting of a number of wind instruments without re- gard to time or harmony is setrcely less than infernal. The place ie crowded with Chinamen, all smoking ; the cos- tumes of the actors are gaudy, tinselled paper goiter a long way its the make-up. The stage is void of scenery and without curtains, and when one of the actors is run through with a sword, and after falling picks himself up and shuffles off by a side door, the " Mulican " man has a decided feeling that the play is rather tame. The joss houses aro in d flerent parts of the town ; the principal one is unClay street. There is no order in their manner of warship. A goodly iurn, ber of gods are in every temple, fiendish, silly looking fol- lows, with dirty bedaubed faces, and all having his own particular name and class of worshippers. "Machu" looks after the wants of the sailors ; " Quantay ' the god of war is appealed to by the soldiers for success in their contests ; "Yuntentin " is the gat of tire ; " Pack Shine Kwain " is the god of wealth ; and in fact there is it god to accommo- date all their wants. These gods are well fed, for we can see tea cakes, meat, yet, more than the necesaaries, for the traceries el life are spend out before them. They, however, only consume the immaterial parte, the offerers carry home the substance to be eaten by their family and friends. But wo observed that the various CHRUJTIAN MISNION1 IN THE e'ITY are doing away with these heathen cus- loms. ' Wu visited the 'Presbyterian mission, the largest and roost successful in the city, where an evening &chef,( is held for teaching the young heathens to read and speak English, as well as looking after their spiritual welfare. The Rev. Dr. Loomis, who has charge of the mis- sion, kindly trephined the workings of the institution, and showed us the dif- ferent classes, and their various modes of teaching, and having had some five years' experience in teaching the young Canadian idea " how to shoot," we were prevailed on to try our hand on the young Mongolians.
