Winuipei, Aug. 17.-A st, : iu is e:i- dently again brewing at Rat Portage. Mc- Master, a Manitoba constable, was arrest • ed on the night of August 15th,aud lodg- ed ed iu the Ontario gaol, fur beiu; drunk and creating a disturbance. Next t tot'n- ing ho was brought before Mr. Lyn , the Ontario Magistrate, an tined 8 ,and costa, -Redding, the l tariu con able who made the arrest, s subsequ utly sweated on a charge of false 'arrest of McMaster. A riot almost broke out lrst evening nu account of t'.' arrest 11 Redding. A large crowd e:,,teay.,ured to rescue him from the Manitoba authori- ties. There was conte lerlble fighting, and some scratches and seri..ua injuries resulted. It is rumoured that the Maui- t•tbat Govenlment will increase the num- ber of politenaen at R•it Portage itumedi- atelj• by twedty self. Bellgre■s in India. tl,- The latest statistics upon this subjuct founded on the census of 1882 show that out of the grand total of the population of British India, which is given at 254,- 899,616, the various sects and cases of Hindoos made up no leas than 187,937,- 486. The Mohammedans, who came next in order, numljered 50,1.21,580. The nature worshippers, or demonulia- t•ors, numbered 5.426,511 ; the Budd. hists, 3,418,844 ; Christians, 1,851,534; Jaes, a sect whose worship is minzled B.ddihiam and Hindooisin, 1,221,896 ; `'S the Sikhs, who are simple theists,, 833,- 426, and those alio came under the head- ing of other creeds or were altogether un- specified, 3,056,130. The Christians enumerated are exclusive of persons of European nationality. The number of Roman Catholic Chris- tians was set kown as 963,058, or a little over half of the whole. Indeed, a strict scrutiny is stated to have brought out the total of native Protestant Christians as only a little over 500,000. But this number shows the very satisfactory in- crease of 86 per cent, in ten years, as in 1871 tho total was only 318,363. Thirty years ago the number of native Chris - Cans was only 102,961. In 1861 this number had increased by 83 per cent., and again in 1871 by 61 per Dent., so Oust there has Leen for some time back a rapid an.l unbroken progress. A CrIrketei's Je1t,. Tom Dale, the well-known Detroit cricketer, played a good joke on Ridptown the other day. A match was to be played between the Ridgetown and Ram Centre teams, and the latter en- gaged Dale, who resolved to come in disguise. For this he grew a beard and got *unhurt, and upon the day of the match he appeared on the grounds, dis- guised as a ragged wood -chopper. He asked what "them things" -indicating the list and wickets -were, and on being told, wished to engage in the game. It was found that one of the Centre players was absent, and the seeming greeny was chosen A member of the club offered to loan ltim a pair of cricket shoes (which, by the way, belonged to Dale himself), and Tom went in to bowl. pa- raiyiing theI:idgetowuers. isles Im a De.tlst's Chair.
