The lova letter he sent cut to I,i set up in the type by the prints», and a lung editorial •.0 " Tariff " to his girl. There was No at both *ado of the route. Judge Ritchie, of Fr'oderiek, Md., has sixteen beautiful and accomplished daughters only nue of whom is married. This is what the French would call an einbsnasswent of Ritchie*. " Are you any relation to toy sister 1' He bluetitd end stammered until the young lady, taking pity on him, solved the matter by saying : " Nu. but he'd like to be. Wouldn't you, Al :ed 1" A Rockville, Collo., young lady who was exaniiuing some hats in one of the millinery shops there lately innocently inquired : " Do the crushed -strawberry hats have the ardour of the fruit 1" There is a girl up m Vallejo whu has two folios who come to see her night about, sold won't go home until .she puts them out. She calls them her pair of stays. "Fes," said the father, "I like to have my daughter here a beau on the score of econoiny. If she didn't some of the family would occupy the parlor and burn the gas." A Western fable -fabricator tells how an old sheep escaped from a drove that was passing through the city the other day, and strayed in to a dry goods store. He walked straight up to a big printed card, " All Wool," examined carefully the fabrics against which it hung, and turning away with a countenance ex- pressive of profound sorrow and intense disgust, walked downeto the rdississippi River and drowned himself. 4Dear me !" exclaimed a city girl who visited a dairy for the first time, " what queer looking stuff it is. Is looks just like yellow plant. 'What is it ?" "Why, that's cream on the top of the milk, sis, said the dairyman. ' Is that so ?" she •asked in astonishment. "Why, the cream I use always conies in boxes and has a label, so we oan tell what it is." The fa -finer sat right down on the stone floor and fanned himself with a milk Pan - Qui' -• a plain exl, ressien of opinion ap- pears in the following anecdote: A lady once retic.-sted Rowland Hill to examine her son es a candidate for the )ministry, remarking : ",I am sure he has a talent but it is hid in a napkin." At the close of the interview with the young man Mr. Hill remarked : Well, madam, I have shaken the napkin, but I cannot find the talent." A procees has been invented by which heavy planks can be manufactured from straw. Ah, yes, now we understand what makes the stawbeety shortcake at our hotels so thoroughly water -proof and solid. The flooring and roof of the same is manufactured by this process from the straw in the berries. And that also ex- plains smother mystery, to wit, viz:- What becomes of the strawberries ? floras of 'Wisdom. Creat things are Dot accomplished by idle dreams, hut by years of patient stu- dy. They that du nothing are in the reads est way to do that which is worse than nothing. ' Be happy if you cats, but do not de- spise thole who are otherwise, fur you know not their troubles. Every person has two education• - one which he receives from others and one more important which he gives hi11o.u:f. It wary times fal s out that we aeon) ourselves touch deceived by others tn:• cause we first deceived ourselves. Ile whu is false to present duty breaks a thread in the loom, and will cud the flaw ;whoa he may4 have forgotten its cause. If you are going to do a goo 1 thing, do it now ; if you are going to do a mean thing, wait till to -morrow. t Krlslesweat Wanted. The boundary dispute has been pro- ductive of an immense amount of talk and fuss and unseemly squabbling. The people, not Ontario alone. but of the whole Dominion, are becoming heartily sick of all this nort of thing. What they want is a settlement. The question has been enough the puppet of the party game. It is now nearly five years since the award was made ; and from that time to the present the politicians have been kicking the boundary question about like a football, without advancing one step towards its settlement, until Mr. Mowat the other day boldly took posses- sion. In taking this course we are convinced that he has the overwhelming support of the right-thinking people of Ontario,not- standing the senseless -not to say un- patriotic -vaporing of a few reckless partizan sheets, fitly generalled by the 3fuil. Their efforts to inflame the public by exaggerated and untruthful accounts of the Rat Portage disturbances, by de- scribing the Ontario constables as Mowat's ruffians and Mowat's lambs, and by representing Mr. Mowat as the pat- ron and associate of low whisky sellers, rowdies,'bummers, and hard characters generally, will have no other effect than to make themselves look childish and ridiculous. Does any sensible man -do any of these writers themselves -for • mo- ment seriously believe those accusations 7 If true, they would be sufficient to drive Mr. Mowat in disgrace of political life, but out of decent society. To say that Mr. Mowat's only motive is to in- fluence voters in the coating Algoma election is just what ono party is always saying of any public sat of the other, and may be taken for what it is 'forth. If that is true of Mr. Mowat, we suppose it is e' puall jrue of Me. Norgeay, who is no dad fo-s1Qlpithy with, and wet ing in thi4Olillist'bt the Ontario *pro sition. P'ot' Abase of this nature may be good pa:.y tactics, but it does not help lo - weds a settlement of qhs dispute, which eve:; honest Coq,errative in. Ontario, in c• ")mon with svetybody else, deeirMm, and desires, moreover, according to the just rights of bis province. There is 'a way opon to a settlement -an easy and peaceable one. Mr. Mowat,' assegais/ the award to be valid in the Assents id r•etiiication by the Dominion, has taken possession. Let those who dispute his right --the Dominion Government, car anybody on its behalf -raise an issue, and carry it into court., Mr. Mowat will plead the award, and its validity will he at once called in question. This issue can bo carried to the privy council, and it is the only issuo which that tri- bunal can ll^cid -is the award valid, or is it nut 1 If they decide alirmstively, Ontario keeps the terri,, - , and there is an end of the matter ; if ue_fatively, the question would bo still open, and there must be either a ratification •by the Dominion, or ano:lter aroitratiun. 1n such an et ent, which course woul 1 bo taken it is idle to surmise so far in advance. Mr. Mowat's action is an invitation to the Dominion to con- test h's right. Let Sir Jelin now re• apond, and we shall soon hear the lust of the bounda:,; dispute. -{Toronto World (Ind.) LeeliM M tp.
