V1voce's.-Judging from the large number of boxes of canned fruits, meats, eta, lying before the door of Vivian's last week, one wuuld expect that., the proprietor of the establishment expected a heavy snow -blockade, and was prepar- ing to provision the town. His stock was never fuller. But in addition to selling over the counter, Mr. Vivian has grade arrangements to dispense cheap lunches and mealsat prices to suit every- body. A cup of coffee, with a sandwich or mutton pie, can be had at his rooms at any hour for ten cents. A good general meal will cost but 20 cents Business men, farmers and others either very busy or far from home should be suited by this arrangement. Mr. Vivian's dining tables are seated tor 75 persons, and the proprietor is prepared to cater on very reasonable terms for complimentary suppers, dancing parties, etc. All kinds of fruita are kept in sea- son, and so immense stock of preserves put up by the proprietor is on sale at cheap rates. BY MatteLes Q RARYa CAMckON, Berrlx- at-Law. Toronto : CasweU 8 Co. The learned Lathes has displayed both industry and research in the prtductior. of the volume which saw lies before us. The object which he bad in view evident ly waa a careful collection, under appropriate heads, of all the statute and case law expounding the law of dower. He has not been conteut with an eluci- dation of the subject in the light of Eng lish and Canadian cases only, but has travelled into the field' of American juriserudonce and brought back many decisions full of instruction. The law of dower hitherto was only to be found in scattered reprints andancient textbooks. Few libraries oontained the necessary works ter the proper investiiggaation of tho many questions which usually arose in this ancient form of action. The more need, therefore, for some comprehensive work of this kind. Tho tint chapter in explanatory of the taw of dower as un- derstood by tha Romana, and as hair been from taut to time expounded un der the common law, with an exposition of how the right may arise, and the-pre- requisi'ea to perfect it. The second chapter deals exclusively with the mar riege contract, the chief factor in the maintenance of the cation. The discus- sion of thit branch of the law and the authorities cited will be found by prac- titioners to be of great value in the con- sideration of other cease than actions for dower. The third and fourth chapter -a treat of the death of the husband and the necessary proofs of it, and the righty of aliens ; the fifth ducu.see the effect of attainder, and the sixth the effect upon the right by divorce or the elopement and adultery of the wife. The seventh and eighth chapter treat of the property and the estate therein which are subject to dower, and the ninth and tenth chap- ters amplify that bench of the subject. We need not further specify in detail the tnany other points of excellence of this work, citing as it docs decided came bearing on every branch of the law of dower, and containing as well a valuable collection of authorities bearing upon other branches of law relating to the ac- quisition and title to real property. Io view of the fact that so many of the titles to land in Oda Province depend on a proper undrastanding of the law of dower, to those whose practice is in tho direction of investments fur clients on real estate thin work will be found of great service. The writer heeadded an appandix con- taining a number of tables, as prepared by eminent •etaaries, showing the com- parative vetoes of annuities at different rates and ages, and a good index, the compiler of which deserves the thanks of the reader. The absurdity of having the county town located at a place difficult to acorns, becomes more apparent every day. There was scarcely anyone in attendance at the reoent Assize Court who did not experience this, for it is both difficult to reach Goderich and difficult to get away in any reasonable time. The people throughout the country are tbmroughly disgusted with the existing state of affairs, and it is high time steps were taken to make them better. It would be an immense saving for all time to come, besides being much more conve- nient for most of the peopio in the coun- try, if all the county business was trans- acted in Clinton. This place is literally the hub of the county, and it is use- less to ignore the fact. - [New Ere. Give us a rest. Bea. e:brlatepaer Frasers Poet.
