How is at we give three cheers and no more? Why Is it that • man cannot see a bindle of tooth -picks without helping himself to one when he does not need it? Why is it that the majority of people use the right hand instead of the left, sad caunot b 1p .wiling at those who use the latter Wby is it that wbeu one asks us the number of days there are iu • certain month, we always soy to ourselves, "thirty days kis September, April, June and November?" Why is it that we turn to the right instead of to the lett, when the heft is far preferable, and if adopted would save many a .a i.leut un radioed* and highways? The driver always sits upon the right of the vehicle; in turning to the right he is furthest away froom the wagon he Lames. and melees he is an expert cannot tell how close he conies to the wheels of the own who passes by him; whereas, if he turned W the lith side, be could look straight down, see to a fraction how close be was approaching an obstacle and thus avoid it. The engineer runs upon the right hand track, and sits upon the right hand side of his cab. The long, narrow locomotive, with its nand tower, belfry and smoke -stack is in front ut him, cutting off his observ.tiooa. He can see only his own track. while the opposite, save at the distance, is almost entirely unseen by him. Capt. Harry Piper, Alderman and Superintendent of the Z.a,lk gical Garden lately communicated the following facts to a reporter of one of Toronto's most iiaausotW "Some time ago we purchased from the collection of animals at Central Park, New York. a monstrous Russian bear, which we have named 'Peter the Great,' on account of his tre- mendous size. ,. Not long after 'Peter' arrived we found that be was suffering from the rheumatism, and in • pretty bad state. I argued that if it oured men it must be good for animists as well; Wily tie Tera "Cearseaceasrat" be teed. A correspondent wntes as follows to the Albany Tiwtu: "I have noticed that several of your readers are in perplexity as to the meaning of the word 'com- mencement; as applied to oollegiete exercises. I had occasion some years ago to study up the origin of this and other words of like character. in the sense used The tens is an Americanism, or, more properly, • New Englandism, originating many years ago among the Yankees in Connecticut, whose vocation it was to direct the education of the young. With a shrewd business sense they determined that the then growing practice of distri- buting premiums might with advantage be adopted at the beginning instead of et the close of the term. All who expected prizes of distinction were thus tempted to continue at school after the close of the summer vacation, the prizes being award- ed and bestowed at the commencement of the term following that in which they had been merited, and only given to those who had renewed theirscholanhip. The scheme became generally adopted, and was in vogue only a few years, when the former custom was renewed, but the exercises retained the name, and this piece of Yankee ingenuity is the real reason for the peculiar teen in questions. A Diane Baer.— A few days since a man who gave has nate as McPherson, came to town, and called upon one ut our medical men, iud informed him that he had purchased • farm in the township of Usburne, near Farquhar, and wished to engage hint as the family doctor. A few days Devine slammed, McPherson came to ttpwn on Tuesday last, and in- formed the doctor that hie preseuoe was requited, as Mrs. McPherson had taken sick. After having made the necessary arrangements with the doctor, McPhee - sou started for a liquor store to purchase some brandy, and • quantity of tea. Having made the purchase he again re- turned to the doctor and inquired if be thought bandy would do fur medical purposes. He was answered in the neoe- tive. McPherson was then supplied with aoxe brandy which the doctor had iu ptresaion. Shortly after the doctor had left to visit the sick woman, the ggnnwwerr s suspicions were aroused that MCPherx+o was not to be tidied on and started out in esareh of the rascal. He overtook him at the Seeable bridge bet se he was going in the direction of Far- quhar the grocer concluded t., wait until the doctor returned. It was not lung before the doctor arrived home again, when the grocer was informed that no such a person has lived at Farquhar. A queer muddle Mr. Meredith makes of the liquor license question. He says the Crooks Act has good features, but he believes "the improvement in the liquor traffic is due t) the increasing temperance sentiment of the country." Here is an admission that the country is growing more temperate, in the face of the allegations of the Mail that more li- quor is consumed than formerly. Mr. Meredith also says that • greater pre - portion of licenses are granted to Con- servatives than Reformers, while the Mail is choking itself in the endeavor to yell out that Conservatives are refused licenses and Reformers favored. But Mr. Meredith says the Conservatives re- ceive the licenses in order that their mouths may be muzzled during election times. This may be very good Gaelic in distant parts, but Mr. Meredith will sarcely repeat it in London, where some of his most active supporters are hotel - keepers. -[Advertiser. wetaseew's tree Vrte'nd.
